Okay, I searched up the archives and it seems a lot of people before me have already asked this question, but I still want to know what the best choice is for my particular scenario. I really don't know what to do right now, so I hope some of the more experienced people might be able to help me out.

Here's my chemistry background:

Took chemistry honors junior year of high school (got A+'s both semesters but the teacher was pretty easy.)

Took SAT II chemistry two times (690 and 680 scores.)

NEVER took AP chemistry (school didn't offer this class.)

Major is pharmacological chemistry.

One reason I'm planning on taking honors series is because I think it will help improve the look of my transcript when I apply for pharmacy school (if I get A's in the class, that is.) But is it really worth the risk? I know honors has a generous curve where half the class gets A's, but competing against a bunch of people who probably took AP chemistry, I'm afraid that I won't stand a chance against them and would fall to the bottom of the curve. I am really puzzled, so any input is appreciated.

Thanks!

From my understanding, HONORS doesn’t impress Grad schools like the whole AP thing impressed colleges.

take regular. honors frequently fails at teaching some of the basic principles. I still remember having to teach my friend S how to do equilibrium calculations because they just glossed over it - and she was one of those A students in the honors series.

and yeah, the majority of my class was people with 4s from the AP.

So i shouldnt take honors unless i got a 5 on the AP?

So from what you’re saying astrina, with someone like me who has no previous AP chemistry experience taking Chem 6AH, I’d probably drop to the bottom of the class in a heartbeat?

I would (and did) take 6A instead of 6AH. I found it pretty easy to style on and get an A. Use the extra time to get good grades in your other prereqs.

If you got a 5, you will not receive credit for 6AH. Start in 140A or 6BH.

@adl0816 - not necessarily. but you should know who you’re up against.

Astrina, you took 6AH correct? Who was your professor? I see that Weare’s the one teaching the class next quarter, and from the ratings on RateMyProfessor, it seems that he’s only taught 6BH, and not 6AH.

Also, I hear people say that 6AH has a lot of physics? I didn’t take physics in high school, so would that be another problem for me?

weare was my 6AH professor. funny, i’m pretty sure i reviewed him on that website before …

yeah, it does. physics would help. but weare put stuff like multivariable integrals with infinite limits on our exams and nobody knew how to solve them, so maybe a graduate math degree would help too.

Oh nevermind, found some 6AH reviews on Weare. Did you get an A in the class? Did you have a good background in chemistry/calculus/physics before taking 6AH?

i don’t see why this is relevant

yes/yes/no

Well the reason I asked for your grade is because I want to see if someone that has a similar chemistry/calculus/physics background as me is able to pull off an A in the honors class.

My chemistry background is only honors level and my calculus background is a 4 on the AP Calculus BC exam. Is that background similar to yours?

but i was an apathetic freshman who hated chemistry and who hated studying even more. and nope, different chemistry and calculus background. guess you’ll have to go experience it for yourself :)
