I would vote for SUNY Geneseo. By far, best value for the $$, good academic reputation, safe, but close enough to Rochester so you can visit civilization and hit the malls once in a while, etc. The other two are fine schools but not worth having your parents shell out an extra $40+K. Use any money saved for grad school later. Just my opinion though! Good luck!

U of Rochester has the strongest academic reputation, by far. Syracuse is a good choice (but not as good as Rochester overall, except in Newhouse and similar programs), but it's not much better than Geneseo that it would warrant huge $$$, so:

Choose Rochester. Geneseo gives you such a bad scholarship program, I'm astonished. That school clearly doesn't respect your achievment or ability. That's a HUGE scholarship from Rochester and Syracuse - going there will open up great connections along with providing a better enviornment and better college experience for you, as they are better funded colleges than the broken SUNY system is. [I'm a NY resident]. Def. Rochester, if not that then Syracuse, and then Geneso.

As a NY mom, I would also agree with Infinite Truth, though I am not as negative towards the SUNY system as IT is.
But for overall academic experience, I'd go--
U of R -- Syracuse -- and Geneseo.

of course, that may also depend on your major. If you were going into communications, I might suggest Syracuse before U of R.
But I do think U of R has the strongest academic reputation amongst the 3.

Infinite Truth - Geneseo's scholarship is low simply because their tuition costs are so much lower than U or R or Syracuse. They don't give out large scholarships. I believe the largest is $3,000.

Thanks for all the comments. Anyone else have any thoughts?

S has similar dilemma with slightly different numbers: Geneseo free ride vs U of R with partial aid vs Brandeis with partial aid. Physics major, with plans for grad school & college teaching or research. A very tough decision. Thoughts?

Syracuse is not a good choice, it is less selective but costs much mor than Geneseo...and Rochester has best reputation and take only a little more than Syra
So, U of Rochester > Geneseo >>Syracuse

mt- I think Brandeis and U of R are comparable schools so your sons decision may really come down to personal preference. Geneseo is definitely a very fine school, but if you think you can afford the price difference, I'd opt for either U of R or Brandeis over Geneseo.

Brandeis and U of R might be similar in that they are both smallish research universities with emphasis on undergraduate education and 'sleeper' reputations academically (compared to more 'name brand' schools), but don't they have fairly dissimilar student bodies? Anyone care to comment on this?

I'm from Syracuse and can tell you that Geneseo is much more highly regarded than Syracuse. Rochester is viewed as a little above Geneseo in terms of academic quality, but not by much. I know several people who have turned down Rochester for Geneseo because of money. The difference between the two schools does not seem to be great enough to warrant paying the extra cash.

Another vote for Rochester. We toured Rochester and Geneseo with our son this year. We were not impressed with Geneseo. My son is not going to either school, but we were very impressed with Rochester

For psychology I would go to U of R for its overall great academics and student life. There will be a lot more opportunities at a school like U of R than a SUNY school. Geneseo is a great school but it isnt going to have what UR has.

U of R > Geneseo> Syracuse ( I do not like cuse)
