Hi all,

I'm currently in the application and interview stage for summer internships. Unfortunately, most of the internships I am applying for are 12-weeks long, but I will only be able to work 11 weeks at most due to an early study-abroad departure. What do you suggest? Should I tell these companies before I get an offer or try to negotiate afterword? Also, how big of a sticking point do you think this will be?

Thanks!

I suggest calling the companies and without identifying yourself, ask what they typically do in those situations. Most of the internship programs I’ve done have been VERY flexible with kids who want to extend or need to finish early if they have a good reason. It’s possible they might ask if you can start early to fit in that 12th week.

Otherwise, I think it’s perfectly okay to wait until after you get the offer, but before you accept it. Don’t commit straight-away to a 12 week program you can’t do–but you can wait until you have the offer (remember, just because they offer something doesn’t mean you have to accept it).

I agree with amplifiar. I was in a summer REU where I couldn’t stay the whole summer due to me being on the semester system and them on quarters. I actually had to leave two weeks early, but they were fine with it (I didn’t even notice about the schedule problem until after I had been accepted, as well).

That’s good to hear. Thanks guys!
