I personally think it's ridiculous, but apparently I'm not allowed to take any class in the chem 6 series because of my 5 in ap chemistry.
But I really would like to take a general chemistry sequence in college, because 1. I barely remember any chemistry! I took AP chem as a sophomore and 2. Some of the graduate programs I'm interested in require a year of general chem with lab in college, regardless of any ap credit.

What do I do?

Do I just take the chem 6 series anyway without credit? Do I go directly into chem 140? Do I take chem 6bh and chem 6ch in the winter/spring (because those are the only classes in the 6 series I can take for credit)?

Thanks!

What’s wrong with not taking them for credit? Since you’re effectively demonstrated knowledge of the material anyway, you can just show up for the exams to make those grad/professional programs happy. It’s not like that requires a lot of work on your part. You can still take 12 units of other classes to maintain your full-time student status.

But going to the class, studying/taking all the exams. It really does seem like a lot of work, all for no units too. I’m not even sure if graduate programs will honor it if they see that i got 0.00 units for taking it.

I’m considering taking the honors chem6 series for credit. It’ll be hard but at least I’ll get units!

Class = 3h a week, and you can bring a laptop and read the news online the entire time if you want. If you got a 5, there’s really not much you can be learning anyway. And your studying/taking the exams will be SIGNIFICANTLY less effort that what your fellow classmates are putting in. And grad schools will honor the fact that you took the class. There’s no way around that, and you’re not the first one to be in this position.

The reasoning of “I want units,” in my opinion, is nowhere near the right reason to be taking the honors series. Extra units aren’t any help to you in the end, you know. Maybe it’ll give you an edge of a few hours in registration times, but that’s it.

I’ve given my opinion on the matter, and that’s from the perspective of a chem major, chem TA, current graduate student, and one who took 6AH. I personally don’t think it’s worth it, but good luck with whatever you choose.

AP tests do less than ideal things to your scheduling flexibility. What’s the point if you have to take the class anyway, especially when you are told you still need the class and get less credit for it but still have the full number of credits deducted from the max you can register for.
