Even though CAP maybe a non-guarantee when it comes to picking your right major, it could be quite possibly the easiest way to get into UT after the top 10% rule(maybe easier)

So you are going to be wasting 1 year not at UT, but if you had top 10% in HS and nothing else and got admitted to undeclared liberal arts you would also have to face the challenge of transferring after freshman year, and you would take the same basic core classes.

It will be easier to do an internal transfer, but they look at the same criteria in all transfers. GPA. The ease of transferring within UT could be counteracted by the ease of getting easy classes at a CAP school, allowing your GPA to be substantially higher.

A 3.8 at a CAP(or another university, UT does not care if you are from an Ivy League) will give you a pretty good shot at getting into any major at UT, including the hardest ones, provided your essays are good. A 4.0 you are comfortably in. Classes could be harder within UT, and it probably is compared to a CAP school, your GPA would probably be lower.

At the end of the day, the basic question is, how much do you want to go to UT?

"Another problem I have with CAP is that it takes up spaces itself that could be going to non top 10%ers with great stats. "

Personally, im a non-top10er with pretty good stats and CAP is my only way of getting into UT...I don't think the CAP program takes spots from people with good stats

"Getting a 3.2 at UTSA is painfully easy. Getting a 2100 on the SAT on the other hand, isn't. Why not scrap the CAP, and give automatic admission for 4 digit SAT scores instead?"

Im fairly certain getting a 4-digit SAT score is much easier than getting a 3.2 at UTSA.

CAP is a rejection. It is not an automatic admission. CAP kids aren't taking spaces away from non-top ten percenters with great stats because those kids were either already accepted or were CAPed themselves.

A 4 digit SAT score guaranteeing admission would admit 80% of students nationally and would end up with 100,000 undergrads at UT. That solution would not work.

UT does not simply reward a good test score. You have to prove yourself in the classroom as well as in your essays and your extracurriculars and leadership.

If you are going to bash a program, it might be helpful to know how it works.

space, hopefully you have some contingency plans. Whereas being outside the first decile seems to be a death knell to one's chances at UT, being outside the 2nd decile (or at the very least, the top quarter) is pretty much a no-go for A&M. I dont know anyone from my high school outside the top quarter that has gotten accepted here.

i missed top 10% by 4 ppl and ended up doing the cap program at UTSA. UTSA was in the nicest part of San Antonio and in my opinion was a better environment then UT (as far as the area). I thought the program was very organized and I didnt encounter any problems during my year at UTSA. I would advise picking a UT major and then printing out a degree plan to see what classes to take at your cap school.

By the way I got into Baylor (1 year scholarship), A%M, and a few other schools but I decided to stick it out and guarantee a spot at UT for the next year. (if you plan to work hard and get a good GPA you can really go anywhere and then transfer to UT, my friend got a 3.75 from Texas State and then transferred to UT)

-also from my expereience the level of difficulty for classes at UTSA are the same as UT, just pick good professors and the prereqs will be a breeze

i'm trying to decide between CAP at probably UTSA and trinity university in san antonio as well.

i wanted to go to UT pretty badly but i might give up on that - mostly, i'm worried that i'll miss out on a real college experience. if i transfer into UT as a sophomore i probably won't be living on campus. i'm worried i might always feel isolated once i get to austin.

Trinity is a damn good school. One of the best in Texas.

UTSA is okay but is still a commuter campus. A lot of the people you know are going to be CAP kids at UT.

Honestly, if money is no object, I'd pick Trinity unless UT was absolutely your number one choice. It is an excellent school and you will be prepared well.

hey guys ummm im having a similar problem, im deciding between CAP or A&M (i just got in on the waitlist)

ok i was really bummed to find out i got CAPped especially since my stats arent bad at all and then i was even more bummed to be waitlisted for A&M.

i applied for a biology major at both schools and am hoping to get into medical school.

i have NO IDEA where to go!!!

UT pros: fun, burnt orange longhorns!!!, friends, better natural sciences?, more prestigious..
cons: im scared my gpa will be in jeopardy if i cant adjust well (from utsa to ut), it's TOO big, utsa is very retarded

A&M pros: good student environment, nice people, 4-yr experience with no hassle, i will be forced to study more in my opinion..
cons: hicktown!!!!

You'd think that CAP would be inexpensive but it is as expensive as UT-Austin. I feel that is pretty lame and ultimately what turned me away from the CAP.

If you don't think you'd enjoy yourself at A&M don't go.

I was accepted to A&M(so was about 25% of the students at my school) and won't be going because I don't think I would love it.

I can see the logic behind CAP with that 10% rule (which I personally don't concur with), but the CAP is in my opinion also another sneaky (but smart) way of saying, "you're rejected, but you might have get in if you prove your worth at college and get transfered in." So while I believe the intent is good, but the CAP program is really just a cover up that you're rejected because of the 10% rule or credibility problems.

To me, I would ONLY take the CAP program if I REALLY wanted UT (which I absolutely DON'T) and it ultimately ends up how much you want UT. If you don't like UT, don't even consider it and go to A&M, Trinity, or SMU because unless you have the motivation for it, you won't enjoy the experience.

hi, i’m trying to get into engineering school in UT Austin; however, i got capped from UT Austin, and currently admitted in A&M.
To accomplish my goal to get into UT, i was considering to do CAP at UTSA, but one thing popped up in my mind:
If i do cap, am i wasting the first two years? because first year you can’t take engineering-related classes. Also even if you get into UT after CAP, your only options are natural science and liberal arts…
so it’ll take me two years to get into school i want…

Oh and what do you take in 1st yr of CAP, like what classes

hmmm is this a waste of time? or is there any way to transfer right after you get into UT after CAP? if there is how long would it take and how do you do it??

I’m not really good at getting information for my colleges…
what’s the best website to get info for UT?

@ TheDong, if your true wish is to graduate from The University of Texas at Austin then two years shouldn’t be that bad.
First of all there are ways to be accepted straight out of the C.A.P. school you attend, around march Ut Austin sends you an email to indicate which school you would like to be considered for. If you decide to apply to the school of engineering you will be asked to write an essay and compete for the school just as a regular non-cap student would for acceptance to the school of your indications. This however will not effect your automatic admission to University offered through cap just in case you do not get accepted into the engineering program.
I personally did cap and just recently got accepted, and I am so grateful I did it!
i think this website should help
http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/docs/cap.flyer.pdf
or you can try
[2011-2012 CAP Students | Be a Longhorn](Current CAP Students | Undergraduate Admissions | The University of Texas at Austin)
or you can just google bealonghorn.com and in the search box enter c.a.p. program and you should find a lot of information on that.

Currently I am in the CAP program at UTSA and I am regretting every second of it. If I had realized the details about this program before it was too late to back out I would be doing something much wiser. Let me list out for you the information I wish I had known before it was too late
There is NO academic financial aid for CAP students. Being top in my class this means I have to pay almost 11,000 dollars this semester when I could be paying only 2,000 because of my grades and ACT score! This is ridiculous and the number one reason you should not do CAP!
You cannot take credit for AP scores until you get to UT, meaning you either have to re take classes you already have credit for, or you have to take easy core curriculum classes that are really just a waste of time. I am paying thousands of dollars to take freshman composition, history of jazz, and elementary Spanish one... The wise thing to do would be to take these classes at a community college and save money!!
-Freshman year students are treated like babies. If you want to actual mature and not have people hold your hand your whole life then live in an apartment on your own or with a roomate, take classes at community college, and transfer into UT once you are an eligible Junior by credit. Then people will treat you like an adult and not a kid.
-CAP only guarantees you into liberal arts!!! Meaning, for example, if you wanted to become an engineer, you’d have equal opportunity transferring from another university (community college, tech, a and m, etc…) as you do with CAP! So save money and don’t do CAP…
If I could do this over again, I would have denied the CAP program, gone to ACC and gotten my core curriculum classes out of the way, worked part time, lived on my own, and applied to UT the next fall. Then, because of my many AP credits, I could have transferred into UT as a Junior and saved lots of money in the process!!
