Car Insurance for Young Adults

Am trying to help my kids navigate car insurance. Does anyone know an excellent company/policy for car insurance for young adults? Especially those without an extensive driving history? I think the rules for insuring young adults who do not have an extensive driving history have recently changed – at least in California.

Would appreciate any leads.

Thanks!

One of my kids is very happy with Progressive. The other one, I think, has State Farm.

Thanks!

As a college graduation present, my wife and I gave our son the automobile that we had allowed him to drive in college, and threw in 6 months of auto insurance (he had secured a job after graduation, but this was to bridge the gap). We went through the insurance broker who handles most of the insurance needs for our family; and the best deal she got was a 6-month policy through Travelers Insurance. I don’t know what insurance our son carries now on his vehicle, because he is paying for that.

We got usaa insurance for D. S has gotten several differ carriers. Being accident free, being good student, having taken drivers ed course all gave discounts.

All depends on where you live. There are many good companies that aren’t big names.

We get raked over the coals in Massachusetts. People are considered “inexperienced” operators until they are 25 or 26. Our son was certified to drive ambulances and fire trucks and it didn’t make one bit of difference on our insurance.

Thanks, everyone!

So far, Progressive looks like they will be able to help us get what we need, but I love all the suggestions and would welcome any additional thoughts!

Location and registration can impact cost. We were going to transfer everything car related to our sons. Found out insurance was much more expensive in the states where they go school.

I’d like to add the question of how much liability coverage is recommended for a new graduate? My kid just graduated from college (age 22) and moved back home. He has a job starting next month and plans to find an apartment with the girlfriend (age 19). Statutory minimum in our state is $25K/$50K. They don’t have any assets to speak of other than the car we’re going to give them (11 years old with $110K+ miles). But kid will have a decent starting salary in a corporate IT department. Also our insurance agent says the girl friend should be listed as an additional driver since she’ll be living with him and probably be the one who drives the car the most. Two “youthful drivers” are very expensive!

In CA, S had Mercury auto insurance and later switched to USAA. He says both were reasonably priced and good.
