Car insurance?

Since I am commuting to college next year, I received my drivers license the other day. I was wondering what rates you guys received for car insurance. Since I am not a primary driver, my rate is about $750 (every year) at the moment (might lower for good grades, etc). What about if you add a used car? What is the general rate for it? We have 2 cars at the moment, might have to add a third since both parents work.
People that live in-campus can also talk about how much they paid if they drove in high school. All information would be apperciated.

Anyone?

Car insurance rates depend on a variety of factors. It is cheaper to add a child to a policy, as opposed to putting the child on their own policy, because it is based on driving history and credit scores. I added two kids at the same time last year, it was an additional 140 per month, we have 4 cars., and that was with the good grade discount.

We paid much less with 2 cars and 3 drivers because our daughter was not the primary on any car. Then we got a used third car - talking 8 years old. With 3 drivers, each has to be listed as primary for one of three cars. Our insurance went up by $100 when we did that. Aargh.

My car is a used car from 2003, I pay about $60 per month - without discounts currently. I’m the primary driver of my car, but under the policy with my parents. I’ve been driving since I was 16, so about almost 3 years and accident free! When I first started, I had to pay closer to $100/month (with good grade discount).

I’m in the process of lowering my price even more. Note: call your insurance company and ask about a safety driving class you can take to lower your insurance rate! And the good grade discount always helps.

Also, it seems certain brands of cars have a higher rate and depending on if you’re a male or a female. I believe my parents recommended me against getting a Honda because the insurance rate would’ve been significantly higher (they said because Hondas were more prone to getting parts stolen, etc). And, if you’re a male, you pay a bit more.

Regarding post 4, I meant to say our insurance went up by $100 a MONTH

when i first got my car i was 19. i live in los angeles so used the metro system we have here. for my first car, a used volvo 1993, it was about 200 dollars a month!!!

After I rear ended someone in my volvo I switched to my mothers policy when i got a 2000 saturn wagon, the car was in insurance under her name, although the car was registered in my name. It was about 60 dollars a month!

Then I got in a bad accident in the rain, no one was hurt but my car was totaled. I got full insurance so i got a check for how much my car was worth. I bought a 2002 volkswagon beetle and my insurance is currently at 80 a month, under my mothers policy. I have FULL insurance.

keep in my mind my mother is 64 and has been driving since the early 60’s with NO accidents. My sister is also under her policy for 3 cars we pay roughly <200 a month. My sister has a speeding ticket on her record.

We live in California, i also havent lived with my mother for 2 years.

so go under your parents policy if you can!!!

otherwise i know people who got cars when they were 27 and their insurance is like 50 a month. but they have the minimal policy.

I am currently under my parent’s insurance, but the issue with my parents insurance is that if I get into an accident within 1 year of driving (assuming it is my fault) I get kicked out of the policy. This insurance company is very difficult to get into so I understand why they are harsh. I am just afraid of getting into some sort of accident within that 1 year or else I am screwed.

well i am a bad example since ive gotten into 3 accidents… i also have adhd and the statistics for drivers with adhd having accidents is much higher than the regular population. most young people i dont know havent gotten into accidents. so dont let my bad luck combo scare you.

The best thing is to stay under your parent’s insurance, if you can. That will keep the rate low because you are in essence being “bundled” with their other insurance policies. If you do need to get insurance on your own then try one of the car insurance quotes sites online like [Car Insurance Quotes Online](http://www.carinsurancequotesonline.co). They are not going to be cheaper than staying on your parent’s policy but at least you’ll do some shopping around to keep the costs down.

Insurance is different for everybody because it is based on where you live, the model and year of the car you drive, your credit rating, your age, and all kinds of other factors. If you are a minor, stay on your parents’ insurance as that is the cheapest way to go.

My adult daughter has lived in WI for three years since graduating from college. We’ve kept her car in our name (no steady employment so we could get away with it) as well as the insurance.
