Career advice for an international student.

First off, I want to clear things out by asking: what kinds of internships can international students acquire in the US?

I've been searching for internships like crazy for the past few months and 95% of the requirements include a permanent residence, a work visa or a US citizenship. It seems to me that if you want to work in the US, an internship is only most probable AFTER you graduate, not while you're in school...

I want to pursue my career in the US, but not finding any suitable internships isn't helping. My "back-up" so far has been to search for internships in my home country or in other places around the world, but is this a wise choice? Will US firms look positively into your resume when they see that they don't have experience in the US market (or do they only care about your experience in the field in general)?

I know one friend who got a Co-op while not having a working visa, and is being paid. Does this mean that the only way to get work experience is through a Co-op?

I'm really frustrated and would be glad if you guys could help me out here.
Thanks!

Anyone?,…
