Career Crisis. Help!

Hey, everyone!

So basically, I have a career crisis. I can't figure out what to do with my life.

I know I have two options: medicine and politics.

Medicine is the option that everyone has been telling me I'd be great at since I was a little kid. Everyone I know wants me to be a doctor - my friends, my parents, my teachers, my coaches, my family - and they all think I'd be a really good doctor.

I'm very good at science, but I have to try really hard. And I don't think I've ever felt that real passion for medicine unless I actually try to feel passion for it.

On the other hand, politics.

I adore history. Everything and anything to do with American history and government and politics is just so fascinating to me. I literally have to tear myself away from my history textbook so I can do other homework and not just finish the book in one sit-down. I have always had intense intellectual passion for this subject and also for English.

The trouble with politics as a career is that I'm a compulsively ethical person who hates arguing, and politics seems so cut-throat and is definitely a lot of arguing.

So I just need some advice on which career to choose. I know it's ridiculous that I'm posting this on CC, but I've run out of options.

Sorry this is so abysmally long, and thanks in advance!

I think you know which answer is right, you just want to hear it from someone else. It’s pretty clear what YOU want to do.

PS. I’m the same way about history. I procrastinated homework by reading up on history

You’d be doing ethics an injustice if you failed to defend what you stand for.

Politics is the clear choice for you. You might want to take some courses in public speaking and join a debate team, or something along those lines, just to see if you can change your mind about this whole arguing thing.

Besides, real politics is about campaigning for and defending a certain stance by appealing to the logos and ethos of the public. Debate is civil and intends to discover the best course of action; arguing is about being self-centered and closed-minded.
