Career dealing with ideas and theories in genetics?

So I really like studying genetics and evolution, but more so the problem solving aspects of them. Here’s some examples of what I mean: solving inheritance puzzles like they give you in class where you use test crosses; figuring out how it’s possible that a blue-eyed couple could have a brown-eyed child; how someone is resistant to malaria and you discover it’s because they have the sickle cell trait.

I hope this sort of makes sense. I guess I’m wondering, is there a career (or a point in a genetics or evolutionary career that I’d eventually reach), where you’re not doing so much research and experimentation but rather taking known info and using it to essentially solve genetic puzzles?

I apologize if this sounds very ignorant but thank you to anyone who responds!
