Career Development Office

Talked to D tonight and she asked if she could e-mail the resume she's developed for applying to internships. She's been working with the Career Development Office (CDO) on both resume and cover letters.

I am staggered at how good the near-finished process is.

Now, I've been having her write business letters, cover letters, etc. for 3-4 years, doing first drafts and then revisions, so she had some experience. But still. The description she gave of the process working with the CDO was terrific. I believe it beats the comparable offices at many other schools to bloody hell.

It also seems that D has gotten over the hump on applying for internships that don't exist, i.e., sending a letter/resume to someplace that sounds interesting but doesn't have any formal internship program. I pointed out that many employment opportunities are developed in this manner without having been advertised first but I don't think she believed me. The CDO, however, has sample letters for "developing an internship" as opposed to "applying for an internship."

One of the most intriquing aspects of our first visit to Smith was our tour guide's explanation of the CDO. Caught us by surprise, actually. Amazing organization that not only helps considerably during your time there with writing, career exploration ,etc...but almost more importantly, their alumnae association and contacts are staggering. After graduating from Smith, they will pretty much make sure that all of your contacts are in order towards your acquiring a job. For the rest of a Smithie's life, they will be available to help in this manner. Amazing, truly amazing!!!! I guess once a Smithie...always a Smithie!

This small bit of information that we gathered from our tour made such an impression on us that day, that Smith became a solid number 1 choice for our D. Now she's in, and we're very happy about it!
