After I graduate, I either want to go into the Automotive industry or work at a tech company in Silicon Valley like Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc. I'm thinking about majoring in mechanical engineering, thinking that it could prepare me for a career in either industry but now I'm starting to second guess if tech companies like Apple hire mechanical engineers. I want to know if majoring in mechanical engineering will make me a good candidate for those kinds of jobs? If not, will majoring in electrical engineering make me a good candidate? Also, can you go into the automotive industry with an EE degree?

The tech companies you described would lean heavy towards EE/CompE/SoftwareE. Likewise, the Automotive industry leans more toward ME’s. However, ME’s are hired at tech companies and EE’s are hired at Automotive. Here’s an example, mechanial engineers at Apple would design the structure and mechanial specs for products (Iphones, macs, ipads, etc.). Electrical and mechanical Engineers are needed everywhere. I’d suggest just doing whichever one interests you the most.

I agree with jcjones. ME is an all purpose engineering degree that can serve as a base for other specialty areas. If working in high tech areas are your dream, it seems to me majoring in EE would be a better choice or go into programming. If Automotive is more of your dream, then major in Mechanical and participate in the baja car building at the school you attend.
