Hi,

Aside from banking, I'm also interested in careers in real estate, but what can you do in real estate besides just being a realtor?

Real Estate developer, acquisitions, land acquisition, asset manager, property manager, private equity, investment banking, appraisal, commercial broker (leasing/selling), advisory, etc.

The entire commercial mortgage and RE investment banking field is pretty large and can pay very well–not so much right now but typically very well. You need the same skills as a good acquisition person/analyst plus a little credit training.
Right no jobs suck but it will be back and it’s a great field. You get to see what you did every day.

how hard is it to break into the real estate industry aside from investment banking and being a realtor? Do you have to go to a top school to get into it?

It’s not easy, especially now. However, it is primarily driven on networking. While you don’t have to go to a top school, you will be at an advantage if you go to a school with a strong real estate finance program (strong alumni ties). Also, due to networking, it’s often best if you attend a school in the region you would like to live.

Real Estate is a very entrepreneurial industry, and starting your own business is one way to break in.

judging from your other posts, wannabebanker, you really dont know what you want in life. But we’re all here to help and so heres my $0.02: I think that the Real Estate industry is fun, much more fun than banking. It’s where you can get creative. Look at Donald Trump. I-banking is much more risky in my opinion. Now, you decide:)

Second that. Real Estate done on a large scale is very exciting and challenging–plus you get a finished product that lasts 100 years or more. There are some good schools with good RE programs–MIT, Penn, Wisconsin, NYU and several more. It really helps getting a good first job if you can’t get into Harvard, etc.
For example UW has it’s own real estate alumni organization that provides great employment and professional help and sponsors meetings, scholarships, etc. Most work in the major RE firms around the US.
