@limner thank you for your response! I am quite unsure of what I want to do after I graduate. I’m insterested more in the social sciences or humanities, so I’m not anticipating having a very high paying job. Grad school is something I am considering as another possibility for after I graduate, but that will largely depend on whether or not I can afford it.
I have been in contact with an admissions counselor at Carleton, and I am currently going through an appeals process to see if I can be awarded more financial aid. The admissions counselor I have been talking to also mentioned how their alumni network is something to keep in mind when evaluating the cost.
My parents understand how much I want to go to Carleotn but are very conscious of the cost. They would strongly prefer to not take out any loans, which I would have to do at Carleton.
I was wondering what are the student outcomes (in terms of jobs, etc,) like at Carleton, as the recent PayScale rankings (http://www.payscale.com/college-salary-report/bachelors) of colleges by graduates with only a BA, Carleton students averaged a mid-career salary of $117,700, and only 34% go into STEM fields. I can assume it’s good, but I’d like more info.
Also wondering how competitive it is at Carleton. It seems like most students are extremely high achieving, so would future job prospects and grad school be an issue if I have a lower than usual GPA? Also, how difficult is it to get good grades or is it really inconsequential if everyone who graduates is pretty set?
Carleton is not a school to rank you among others. Get you educated enough to be in your chosen career or a graduate school. 80% of graduates in 90s of Carleton attended graduate schools. I don’t think you need to worry about class rankings, your GPA vs. others.
Carleton’s acceptance rates are over 80% for Law and just below 80% for Medical schools. National average is Below 50 %. UC Barclay is just above 50%. Carleton will not prevents you from your goal in the educational point of view.
Carleton also guides each students having enough opportunities. Not let a top or an aggressive student collects all available trophies by himself; multiple interns, multiple study abroads programs, multiple summer programs etc. unless a sequential one.
I think this is a good place to monitor and I’m sure there is a student run facebook group for prospective students. Then of course, stand by your mailbox and hope for a blue folder. Remember, it’s not the end of the world if nothing shows up, there’s more than one road you can take to reach your goals
Carleton wait list. We officially heard from them today and they said they are not going to the wait list. Their letter states they filled all their spots on May/1. They also updated our status on their site.
Hey @JasonPatana or @WizDexter99 do you mind posting the message that they are not going to the waitlist this year? Thanks! My friend, who is extremely qualified and really wanted to go to Carleton, was waitlisted and I don’t want to ask her. But I was just curious as to what they said. Tough admissions year for everyone ugh
Here is the Carleton note emailed to us and posted on the Carleton site May/16.
Keep in mind there is no harm in appealing and saying that you really want to go.
"Dear _____,
It has been more than a month since we notified you that the best we could offer you is a place on our wait list. I write now with the news that we have obtained our class as of May 1st, having heard from a sufficient number of students who have accepted our offer of admission.
Unfortunately, this means that we will not be going to our own wait list and offering you admission to Carleton. I know this must be very disappointing news and not what either of us might have hoped for given your patient waiting to hear from us post May 1st. I do regret that we will not be able to consider your candidacy at Carleton any further.
No matter how we might express it, this letter is a final acknowledgement that we have no more space in the Class of 2019. The fact that we reach this point has to do with our small size and not your good qualifications or potential for future success in college. We trust that you have made a firm commitment to pursue your college studies at another fine institution as of May 1st and will devote your best energies to that pursuit. Our biggest regret is that your performance will not shine forth at Carleton. Again thanks for your strong interest in Carleton.
Sincerely,
Paul Thiboutot
Vice President and Dean of
Admissions and Financial Aid"
Seems non or nearly non were admited from the wait list for the class of 2019. Take a look a: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carleton_College : “Admission to Carleton is highly selective, with the most recent incoming class of 2019 admitting around 20% of applicants and not taking any students off the wait list.”
