Hello, I am an international student from Iraq and was recetly offered admission to Carleton College (my top choice). I just had a few questions about Carleton College’s academics and student life. Firstly, as a student who does not drink (I am not against this and I respect everyone else’s views on drinking), I am planning on asking for a substance-free dorm, and I would be very thankful if I was provided with a brief summary on how the substance free dorms (or floors) and the students residing are. Which residence halls have substance-free dorms, and how are these halls. Secondly, I would like to know a bit more about the Biology major and curriculum in Carleton College. Is Carleton a strong college in the field of biology? Is the curriculum detailed enough? How often do students study in labs? Finally, I would like to know more about the research oppurtunites provided to students. Is it easy to participate in a research project? Can you conduct your own research? I would be very thankful if I was provided with a brief answer for the questions above!!
I would be very pleased if other accepted students asked their questions here too!
Hey!! I’m currently a Carleton Student who lived on a sub-free (substance free) floor last year as a freshman. If you ask to be a On a sub-free floor, they will definitely put you on a sub-free floor so I wouldn’t be too worried about it. I think most residence halls have one sub-free floor so you could be placed in any of those. I’m also going to be a Biology major (we declare next term) and biology is one of the largest majors at Carleton so we have a lot of great faculty and facilities. It’s a bit hard to do research in labs with professors because they are in high demand but you definitely can get the opportunity if you ask around. You can definitely conduct your own research in to ways: you can apply to do research under a professor who supervisors your research or you can do “independent study” as one of your classes and have a professor supervise. You will definitely find the opportunities if you seek them!
I’m an international student too, and am very excited about being accepted into the Class of 2021! I had a question regarding diversity at Carleton. Carleton has 10% international students, which translates to only about 50 international students in all, and I was a little worried about whether diversity is valued on campus? And whether international students are comfortable and not overshadowed by the dominant American culture?
