Carleton College v.s. Macalester College

Hello! Sorry if I'm not doing this correctly, this is my first time attempting to post something! I just need a bit of help. I was recently accepted into both Carleton College and Macalester College in Minnesota. However, I'm not sure which college to choose. Both have similar financial aid offers, as Mac's is only about $150 cheaper than Carleton's. Also, I would like to double major in biology (human genetics focus) and French. I would love to hear your opinions on the pros and cons of each college. Thank you!

Macalester is urban, Carleton is in a small town. Carleton is a bit more selective. Those are probably the biggest differences. Also, Carleton runs on a trimester system.

Have you visited both colleges?

Both are terrific. You can’t choose wrong  Have you spent an overnight at each - attended classes in your two subjects, met with students eaten in the cafeteria? This should help you get a “feel” for each.

I have not visited either college. I am thinking about attending admitted student days for either within the month, however. It just kinda depends on what my schedule looks like.

You can ask for days to visit colleges to your high school, especially if it’s only 2 days. Do it quickly though: once you have their permission, you need to email admissions so that they arrange something for you unless you can conveniently attend on regular Admitted student days, speak about classes you’d like to attend, meet with students, etc.

Okay! Thank you all for your help! =D

You may also want to check the course catalogs and schedules in the subjects you may be interested in, to ensure that they have reasonable offerings in them.

They are both great schools and have a number of similarities. I would try to attend the two accepted student days and see which school feels like a better fit.

Definitely try to visit both. My Ds visited both. One liked Carleton for its high geek factor. The other preferred Mac. It’s definitely a YMMV point.
