Yesterday John Guckin, class of '14, was killed in a car accident while driving home for spring break with his father, who also died. He was a really good guy who I had the pleasure of getting to know these past 2 terms through seeing him at campus events and around Goodhue. He will be missed by us all. I hope you will all keep his mother and family and friends in your thoughts.

Wow, that is tragic. I never knew him, but that is truly unfortunate. It reminds you of how precious life is, and it puts college admissions in perspective for us all. In totality, it doesn’t matter where you’re accepted. Rather it matters that you are happy and healthy. My thoughts are with the family.

I saw this heartbreaking news yesterday and cannot stop thinking about it. The son was driving on what was probably slick roads and the accident was head-on with a semi. My Carleton daughter made a 20 hour car trip for Spring Break, and I had her text at gas station stops because I was concerned about the long drive after working so hard to finish the semester up. It is so unbelievable John was just making a short drive home and this tragedy occurred. I keep thinking of his mom who was waiting for her son and husband.

I didn’t know him too well, but he did his math homework at the same time as me - Monday/Wednesday mornings after the first class. He was funny and kind and always brightened up my day. It’s hard to believe he’s gone - I feel so terrible for his poor mother.
