We visited Carleton for the first time when we dropped our daughter last Tuesday. Everything about Carleton College was impressive right from the time we were greeted by the cheering welcoming committee to the Parents' reception at the end of the day. The folks are so friendly, the campus was so beautiful and the weather perfect. The student volunteers who helped carry all the luggage to my daughter's room were simply amazing.
The only sad note was our sadness at leaving our daughter so far away and our daughter's feeling of homesickness. Hopefully, Carleton will remedy this when she gets busy with classes and friends.
Thank you to all the volunteer Carls and the administrative staff for making this a wonderful experience.

So glad to hear your trip went great!

There are many Carleton parents and alum who live in the Cities (me included. Join the parents’ listserve - and feel free to send out requests for help if you need it.

Don’t forget about Friday Flowers (seach the listserve). A florist will deliver flowers to you daughter’s mailbox on Friday. The mailboxes are never locked - so they will be waiting for her by Friday midday. Not sure which florist is in charge now (they rotate every 6 months) but you can call the only 2 in town to check.

This list serve will also give you info on local bakeries that deliver, etc., etc.

Welcome to Carleton!

Welcome to Carleton! As one of the student-athlete volunteers who helped freshmen move in, I’m glad that we could help! What dorm is your daughter in?

Nourse. Were you one of the student athlete volunteer serving Nourse?
Thank you to all the volunteers. I didn’t have to even lift my pinky finger to transport her stuff. :)

Mom90, thank you for the listserv information. I was unable to find the contact information for the local florists and bakeries. Could someone send it to me please? I love the idea of Friday Flowers. Is this a Carleton tradition?

…the weather is not always perfect . It gets very cold. On the good side, the winter’s can be cozy and the campus is still very attractive.

Judy’s Flowers and Forget Me Not Florist are the 2 florists in town. One of them has the contract for the first 6 months. Not sure who it is now. Yes - this is a HUGE tradition at Carleton. Here’s a link to a campus picture: [Carleton College: Admissions: Friday Flowers](http://apps.carleton.edu/admissions/activities/friday_flowers/)

Quality Bakery will deliver. They will deliver and you can pay by sending a check in the mail (after the delivery is made). That is Northfield.

Once you become a member of the parents list service, you can search the archive for all kinds of information. It’s been so much fun over the past few years to welcome new parents.

PDad, I’m a little late posting, but welcome to the Carleton family. If possible, attend Family Weekend and sit in on a class or two.

If you ever plan a visit during a non-function (Family Weekend, etc) time, try to arrange for a room in the Alumni Guest House. When I went to see my daughter’s a cappella group perform, I was able to stay there for less than the Archer House (and the Guest House is much nicer).

Fireflyscout, I didn’t know your daughter was in an a cappella group! So am I. Which one is she in?

She was in Nightshade, but she graduated in 2010. Which one are you in?

Cool! I’m in the Knightingales.

Talking about a cappella, when do auditions begin? I suggested my daughter to try it. Are they tough to get in?

I’ll be following your reports with interest, Pdad. Williams and Carleton are two of my senior daughter’s top few choices right now, so it will be interesting to hear your impressions of Carleton given that you’ve already got a good read on Williams. She’s actually doing an overnight at Carleton in two weeks, and we had a great visit to Williams a couple of weeks back.

And she most definitely wants to join an a capella group!

Auditions are this weekend, and signups are at the Activities Fair tomorrow.

I’d say that yes, a cappella groups are hard to get into, but that shouldn’t discourage anyone from auditioning. It varies a lot from year to year, but on average each group has about 30-50 students audition for 2-4 spots. Keep in mind, though, that most people audition for multiple groups, so there’s a lot of overlap. Having been through the audition process three times now (once for myself and two times for new members), I’d encourage everyone to audition for as many groups as they can, because that’s the best way to make sure you find a group that’s a good fit for your voice, your musical taste, and your personality. I auditioned for two groups, and I didn’t even get a callback for one of them, but I got into the other one.

I can surely help you with whatever I can, rayrick. You can send me a PM to discuss further.
