Ah yes, another versus thread! I really wanted to avoid making another one, but I would really appreciate some input.

Bowdoin. duh!

Carleton. duh!

Lol…

What’s your intended major? Is cost an issue?

midwest or maine. that’s really the only relevant issue. they’re both so very good. i suspect if you wanted to make it an issue: if you like math - go to carleton; if you like polisci go to bowdoin. but that feels ridiculous. congrats on the decision!

yes, math at carleton is awesome.

I think I’m going to go with Carleton actually… I know Bowdoin is ranked higher on the US News and World Report list, but that really means nothing to me… I love the midwest, I’m interested in math and the hard sciences, and Carleton seems like a more, well, “intellectual” place I guess.

For math/science, I think Carleton has the edge over Bowdoin. Bowdoin is a great school but is definitely preppier and less eggheady than Carleton.

I’d agree with dietcokewithlime. A walk around Bowdoin feels much more traditional/preppy and much less individualistic than Carleton (using that word a lot lately). Most impressed with Bowdoin’s dining hall/dorm/interior historic building upgrades, though - they did a great job. Still certainly prefer Carleton’s campus and would never give up the Arb. A sucker for the Northfield/Minnesota-nice vibe (Brunswick felt much more cold - no pun intended). No question Minneapolis-St. P over Portland.
As far as rankings are concerned, Bowdoin-Carleton-Middlebury-Pomona have switched positions on a regular basis for years. I’d hope no one looks at these in anything more than a very general sense to guide college decisions.

Agreed. Bowdoin is extremely preppy, very privileged feel, the tour we went on focused on their contributions to the Civil War, which as none of us are re-enactors, felt very odd and out of date. Kids at Carleton are more the intellectual elite than the actual elite…And MSP is much more happening(and easier to get to)than Portland.
