Carnegie Mellon Chance

I am going to be a senior in high school for the school year 2010-2011. I would appreciate any feedback that would help me in the admissions process. I am not sure if I want to apply early or regular decision to Carnegie Mellon, which is my number one choice. If there is a greater chance of acceptance, I would gladly do it. I am also applying to Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Case Western, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and University of Michigan Ann Arbor. My credentials are as follows.

High School Schedule:

Freshman Year: Honors Earth Science, Honors Biology, Pre-AP World History, Algebra II, Spanish II, Honors English 9, Physical Education 9

Sophomore Year: Precalculus, Chemistry, Honors English 10, AP World History, Computer Science, Physical Education 10, Spanish III

Junior Year: AP Calculus AB, AP Chemistry, AP Statistics, AP US History, Spanish IV, Honors English 11, Art 1, Physics

Senior Year: AP Calculus BC, AP Biology, AP Physics, AP Macroeconomics. AP Microeconomics, AP Government, AP Literature, AP Spanish, AP Psychology

Standardized Testing:

PSAT: 95th percentile for graduating seniors (Scores from sophomore year, could not take junior year due to swine flu.) Not sure if colleges care about these.

SAT: Math-710, Reading-680, Writing-730 Essay-12 (Not sure if I need to take it again, this was my first time taking it and I went in cold. I could probably raise my scores through preparation. Please give me insight as to whether I need to take it again.)

SAT II: Have not taken. Plan to take Math II, Chemistry, and undecided about third, maybe Physics.

GPA:

Weighted: 4.3 Unweighted: 3.9

Extracurricular Activities:

Academic Team Captain (Multiple District Championships)
Chess Team Captain
Lincoln-Douglas Debate
Engineering Awards at regional science fair
Air Pollution Research

I am sure that there is more that is not coming to mind right now, but this is most of it. Please help me make an informed decision. I would be more than happy to answer any questions that any of you may have or give more information if necessary.

Some more information.

Please give assistance, I am willing to try and help anyone who helps me.

You have great scores but your extracurricular activities are a bit scattered and there is not a theme, but they are impressive. Maybe only out what pertains to what you want to do and you can tell a story that way. However, I think you have a great shot! =] Good Luck!

Thank you for the input honeybee, i’m sorry if it wan’t clear, but there is a definite scientific leaning to my extracurriculars, maybe it is hard to tell because I listed so many, but most of the time is spent on science. Sorry about that. If you want me to take a look at something of yours, I would be more than happy to, just give me a link.

You already helped me out. But what was so great about your brother that he got into those schools with a 3.5? I have a weak GPA also.

Yeah well, colleges are trying to put together the pieces of the puzzle of who you are. Your grades are only a small part of that, and even if your grades are not the best, if you can show them redeeming qualities, they will gladly accept you.

Yeah I guess your right, but im so nervous and discouraged.

I think that if you applied ED to Carnegie, you would almost surely get accepted. It would really help if you got your SAT up about 100 points though.

I agree with puggly that if you ED for CM you would have a verystrong chance at getting accepted even with your stats as they stand now but of course a bump in SATs would do nothing but help. Things such as your air pollution research would definitely help you stand out so i would try and build up around that outside of simply science club. You should be fine at all your other schools as well

I would probably have to agree witht he others who have replied to you. If you want to get into the science school at C.M. focusing on your ECs that are more science related (the air pollution sounds very pormising). If it were me as far as SATs go, I’d want to raise all my scores so they were at least all 700 or above, but then again, that’s just me. A higher SAT score can never hurt, it just depends on how much time you have to spend on it. I think you have a deffinite chance at your schools. =) Good luck!

thank you so much for the advice!! im sorry im not as familiar as u were with your schools but based on your scores and awesome ec’s id say u have a good chance…dont rlly know specifics about these schools, sorry

ya. def. agree with tonkgirl… because what your score tell you is that you have achieved high score no doubt… but youre lazy enough to not try again once more.
they 710 good!
they see 730 very god!
(they look at next score with gleaming eyes)
They see 680, and frown appears… keep it level… make it so your reading score is really good. and that is a little prep work… study in all areas a tiny bit, and bam! you got a 750-800 in all! and thats going to be really good!

as far as ur ECs o… i do see the science part of it so that is good.

btw. thanks for chancing me…

one thing, They club itself is called Slumdogs… so idk!!!

lol but thanks

ull do fine… just boost sat scores and bam! party at your dorm!
