Carnegie Mellon Chances?

Hey guys, thank you for reading this.

I have a 3.60 unweighted GPA and a 4.14 weighted GPA (I take mostly honors and APs). Each year my GPA has been improving and this year I should end with straight As (and A-s) with one B. I also have a 30 ACT (however I am planing to take it again) and I go to one of the top high schools in New Jersey.

This year I took AP Chemistry and AP Computer Science in addition to honors physics, honors science research and honors precalc. Next year I will be taking AP Calc and AP Physics along with other honors classes.

For extra curriculars, I was a National finalist in JSHS this year, and I won four awards at my state science fair. Last summer and this summer I worked in a lab and created a robotic fish which is cheaper than others. Next year I will be entering Siemens, ISEF and STS.

I also was a finalist in the NYU TCS science competition sophomore year, and I won first place at a hackathon (I will also be organizing a different hackathon this summer).

In addition I am a Nationally ranked fencer (currently being recruited by other colleges) and an Eagle Scout. Lastly, I also founded the robotics club and the ski-fi/fantasy club at my school.

Any help would be extremely appreciated - as soon as I stepped on the Carnegie Mellon campus I fell in love with it.

Note: I want to study computer engineering.

Your test score is much too low. I would say that you need to get your ACT to a 32 or 33 to be even marginally competitive with your current GPA; and you may need a slightly higher GPA as well. CMU is just very competitive school for admissions.

As far as being in love with the place, our guidance counselors like to say that you need to find several schools that you are (or can be) in love with.
