*** Carnegie Mellon Class of 2019 RD Discussion and Results Thread***

priority mail 1-3 days, first class mail seems to be the same 1-3 days. except for the locals, most people will get the decision roughly the same time the online results are in.

@Enthouse‌

I don’t think so. I think that the reason is that it’s easier to get into your intended discipline by applying to a major. Being accepted undecided means that you’ll have to do well on the intro courses to advance, and there has to be room in that major. If you’re accepted for a program, you’re already in, and only have to do well on the intro. Does that make sense? I might be wrong, but that’s what some (current and former) CIT students told me.

@hungryteenager

Do you know if it’s possible to be accepted to CIT as Undecided without getting ECE as an option? Because I’m not interested in that anyway and I don’t want my chances to be hurt because I’m being considered for a competitive major I don’t even want. Maybe I should’ve specified which ones I was interested in?

Sorry, I’m totally over-thinking this. I think the stress is getting to me.

@Enthouse‌

From what I understand, you take 2 intro courses of your choosing in freshman year, then declare your major. If you applied for a certain program, you take that intro and another one, and are automatically matriculated if you declare for it. If you’re undecided, you take any 2 intros (say, cheme+meche, or any other combination), but may not be able to declare for your first choice, but that’s mostly an ECE problem (chemE, for example, has a ton of students go to MCS for straight-up chem).

I asked CMU about the Master Promissory Note - Direct Loan and Entrance Counseling - Undergraduate appearing in the portal. This is what they said, “As a prospective undergraduate student you would need to contact The Office of Undergraduate Admissions as they handle all financial aid matters for incoming students.”

@hungryteenager‌

Oh alright. I’m regretting my choice now but I suppose there’s nothing that can be done about it. Besides I’ll take comfort in the fact that if they reject me it could be for some completely different reason.
I should probably stop talking about rejection now. Brings down the mood.

And good luck! Is CMU your top choice?

i visit cmu last spring break. Since the campus is in Pittsburg, there are way more than plenty hotels to choose from. I really dont think the campus is far away from the city, only took about several minute drive

Are you inferring that the financial form indicates acceptance at CMU?

@FLFather‌ , I hope not.

I don’t know. We will find out in few days.

@patertrium – Plenty of hotels. Contact admissions. They have a list they partner with and the hotels will drive him to and from CMU. We took two visits this year to CMU, and the visits moved CMU status from “Why” to “Preferred over Harvard.” Best part of the visit for me was talking with the security people. Learned everything about the campus.

nice cmu received my fafsa today

@Shoshonte‌ Thanks much! CMU is his top choice. But he’s never visited. Do you think letting them go alone is better or better to go with parent? I’m torn between thinking it’d be a great chance to talk and mull things over together versus let him experience being there completely on his own. There would be no family within 600 miles and all he’s known is northern California weather. :slight_smile:

You should go with him. Pittsburgh is a wonderful city. CMU campus is beautiful. He needs to share it with you.

Wondering if anyone got their admission decision in the mail today.

@patertrium‌ I’d say come with but let him explore one day alone. Pittsburgh is a wonderful city, although the weather…

CMU portal currently indicates in red “Admission and Financial Aid Notification” to right of name. Don’t recall if this was always there. Does each applicant’s portal read similarly?

@FLFather‌ Yes I have had that for a while. I don’t believe it means anything.

@patertrium – If he’s not used to Pittsburgh, I would come with him. It’s nothing like Northern California. Besides the weather, Pittsburgh is very hilly and woody. The rivers separate South Pittsburgh from Downtown, and the bridges take a little while to navigate before you figure out the shortest distance from point A to point B. The freeways are more complicated entering and exiting than 101/880/580/etc. The airport is on the other side of town. CMU is adjacent to a nice residential neighborhood to the north/east, but Univ. of Pitt takes up the real estate to the east/south. As @elenesay said, let him explore for a day by himself while you catch a Pirates game. It’s not the A’s, but it’s a close 2nd to the Giants. The hotels are close and I stayed at the Sheraton on the south-side during both visits for $100/night. Also, CMU is located in a college town. Northern CA has nothing to compare to it. Stanford and Berkeley are too spread out; Santa Clara (my Alma Mater) feels suburban and even rural compared to CMU. St. Mary’s is too small. And there’s plenty to see and do while your son is visiting CMU. Once there, CMU “owns” the bus system, so your son can get anyplace he needs. You’ll enjoy the visit.

The financial aid portion of the CMU portal has been cut off. FAFSA and CSS, etc. What does this mean? Is it slowly dissolving?
