Carnegie Mellon Class of 2021 Applicants Discussion Thread

Hey guys, question for those that ED’d-- did you guys get an interview? I’m frantically trying to schedule one but spaces are all full (in time for the optional essay about interviews). I asked someone going to CMU and they said interviews don’t factor that much, but IDK…

If I can’t get one in time by the deadline, should I still opt for an interview after the application is due?

How many words were your guys’ “one page” essay?
Mine is 700 and I reduced the font size to 10 so it could fit lol

730, Arial (I would have even more space with TNR) 11pt but I still need to edit it again

I already submitted.

Word Count: 596
Font style: Helvetica
Font size: 13

~600, Calibri, size 11.

Finally submitted early this morning with 727 words, Times New Roman, 11.5pt and one extra line

654 words. 11 pt and Times New Roman

661 words Times New Roman 12 pt. Submitted as a PDF which changed the font size a bit because there is a bit more room at the bottom than with the Word file.

684 words Times New Roman 11.5 pt. font.

What kind of headings do you put on PDFs uploaded to the Common App to answer essay questions?

I didn’t include any heading

686 words - fiddled with margins a little to fit on 1 pg. - used Times Roman - 11.5. No heading/title. Spacing on Pdf seemed to change it a little.

My final doc was 1.25 pages and I was accepted ED. I don’t think spacing is too important.

Hmm, no scores are shown in my son’s portal, but I had his ACT and SAT II scores sent in September. College Board shows the SAT IIs fulfilled on 9/28. ACT shows that score as sent. Test Scores section on the portal is blank. He submitted the application on 12/31.

I guess he’ll call on Monday.

@Ynotgo my D17’s SATs were sent in late September and they recorded as the last thing “received” - 1/3! Not sure what’s going on but guessing they are still processing all the applications so their systems might not be reporting things accurately. I was planning to call them about this, but my husband thinks I’m just being paranoid. LOL. (In your son’s case a call should be made just to make sure they, indeed, have them).

How hard is it to get in CMU tepper???

If I can have an on-campus interview (as part of a fly-in program), and am offered an off campus interview, can I do both?

@math3matical I think if you have been interviewed once, they may not let you do it a second time. Pick one that you want to do.

What is this admission newsletter email from CMU about? Did anyone get it?

@krystalee I got it. It was just updates from the Office of Admissions about new programs they are offering and things happening around campus.
