CMU costs about 50k + ... and with EFC 0..i got
7k in loans, about 23k in aid(grant,workstudy) ...
it's quite amazing... even U michigan gave me 25k in aid, excluding loans, and it's a public..
i guess i expected too much from CMU, which i thought would provide alot more in aid for a poor student like me... economy sucks i guess..
right now im on priority waitlist.. should i just give up on CMU because there's no way i can attend even if im admitted.
Is there a way i can negotiate with the FA office?

They say that if you get offered a better package by a comparable private college that you can dispute your award and try to get CMU to match it.

Why not fax them a copy of your other aid offers, with a letter asking if they can match it? Even if the schools are not comparable, even if you expect to get zip. Though I’m not sure if that is the usual procedure, they tend to read the faxes pretty quick. We did that…expecting nothing, my son feels very lucky to even get accepted to CMU. But hey if they give us 5 bucks that’s 5 bucks more towards tuition then we had before!

The original poster said he is waitlisted… and so is my son-- I would think they aren’t really concerned about negotiating with those who aren’t their first picks?

Rumor has it that wait list is not a great position for FA Negotiations. “Priority wait list” may = invitation to call and say that you can pay full boat if they will move you to accepted.

If CWU is not a possibility, you may want to release your wait list spot for others who might be able to use it.

I guess I didn’t read the original post carefully, I didn’t realize it was a waitlist situation. I would imagine it is unlikely you could negotiate financial aid before you’re accepted. In fact, might be best to leave that one alone until that acceptance letter is in hand.

Yes. I’m on priority WL, and really want to go. ^ That doesn’t imply that I can pay for the school.
Well great. I’m taking my name off the list.
Bye CMU.
