hello guys, i am an international student from india. i have applied to comp science in SCS as my 1st major but have been rejected.anyways i have been accepted to ECE in CIT in CMU.im really interseted to do a CS major in my undergrad.can i trasnsfer from ECE to CS during my study in carnegie?will the transfer b tough or will it b fairly simple?....also should ther b a vacancy in the SCS for me to b allowed to transfer? generally wat % of transfer applicants are allowed to transfer from ECE to CS?if at all my transfer applicaton is denied the 1st time can i apply again?generally how many students transfer from ECE to CS per year?

i rang up CMU and all they saw is that the 2 requirements that r need for a trnasfer are

1.having a good academic standing in the 1st and 2nd semesters
2.a min of a B grade in 15-211 course.

also doing a doble major in ECE and CS is alos an option.but however is the double majoring option given to any student who wishes to do so or is ther some selectivity or requirements?

also i have been admitted to UIUC CS and Georgia tech CS departments.so can u please help me out with this.where do u think i need to go for my undergrad.all factors except education wont bother me.my fav college is CMU but the fact that i got ECE is the only reason im still thinking.

CMU is ranked at 2nd position along with stanford in the computer department and UIUC and georgia tech are 5th.but in electrical CMU is 10th but UIUC is still 5th.

so do u recomend me to go to CMu and try for a transfer or go to UIUC or georgia tech in which i can join CS directly?if the transfer from ECE to CS is simple then i prefer going to CMU(i just love CMU's CS department)

u may feel that i am bombarding u all with questions but im really confused now and dont know which college to choose from??

Maybe you should e-mail CMU to ask whether it is possible/relatively easy to transfer. If it turns out to be impossible/hard, you should probably consider UIUC.

CMU SCS is the obvious choice for CS, but UIUC is not far behind. If the internal transfer at CMU is going to be difficult, you should seriously consider Illinois for computer science. I am a student at UIUC CS, and I am really pleased with the department overall.

Nishal, even I am from India & have got through CMU in ECE dept. & I am on waitlist at SCS. I checked with CMU, as per them they have got very high acceptance rate of 90%+ & chances are rather bleak. However as per one of the students from CMU transfer is very much possible since both the dept. have synergies.
Even I have got through UIUC in comp science & am seriously considering it as CMU is turning out to be really expensive. Do you have any idea on any teacher assistantship or any other kind of funding available at CMU.

Sang54 - is there any possibility of getting any kind of TA, RA, internship at UIUC in comp science dept. & how well are the job prospects after completing the course for international students & what are the average starting salaries. (is there anyway I can contact you over phone/email as well to seek your help)

Q: Is there any possibility of getting any kind of TA, RA, internship at UIUC in comp science dept?

A: Yes (saw it happen couple of times), but you will have to be exceptional to be offered a TA position. Internship opportunities are all around the corner. All the top CS firms recruit at UIUC (Google, Amazon, VMWare, Microsoft, AMD, Oracle, etc). Major financial/consulting firms also recruit at UIUC engineering (Accenture, Deloitte, JP Morgan, etc).

Q: How well are the job prospects after completing the course for international students?

A: It really depends on your skill. If you have enough merit in you, you will be offered a lot of top jobs, unless the job position specifically requires citizenship.

Q: What are the average starting salaries?

A: Around $65,000 for CS. Some of the top students get paid over $100,000.

thanks sang 54. which one would be your pick between UIUC & UMich for comp science as I have finally come down to these 2 colleges. Is there any difference in the cost between the 2 of them & which one will be a better bet from the starting salary point of view.
Also, do both these schools get similar kind of financial companies hiring CS graduates or UMich edges out UIUC....Pl. help..

Even though I am an avid fan of UIUC, I must give the edge to Michigan. Michigan's engineering is just as good as UIUC, and has slightly better repuation overall. In terms of CS, UIUC is tradionally ranked higher than Michigan, but Michigan can claim Larry Page, which means something. Also, I think Michigan tradionally does a better job placing its graduates in to financial sectors than UIUC. UIUC engineering does a fairly good job, but financial sectors are all about prestige, and Michigan has an edge over UIUC in this regard. Michigan, in my opinion, is the second best public institution in the country. Go with Michigan, unless UIUC is significantly cheaper for you (which I doubt, since your an international student).

.... Can't believe I said all that, haha. Michigan is THAT good.

Thanks Sang54. Any idea on what will be the starting salary for CS/CE undergrads at Umich & especially for international students if you are aware off.
