My son has applied to both Illinois and CMU for Computer Engineering and we visited both campuses. You’ll get a good education in your major at both places.

If you like a large, attractive campus where you can meet people who are majoring in any imaginable area, with a huge selection of extracurricular activities, pick UIUC.

If you want to root for a big time sports team, pick UIUC. If you want to watch your friends play for the school team, pick CMU.

If you want a more intimate school, with a quirky mix of budding engineers/scientists and artists, pick CMU.

My son has been accepted to Illinois, and is waiting to hear from CMU. He really doesn’t know which he’d pick at this point, but that will be up to him.
