Hey guys! Anyone who applied to the Carnegie Mellon SAMS Program for this summer, did you guys get your decisions? I got mine and I was accepted! YAY! I also applied to the MIT program, MITES, but was rejected. When I got my acceptance letter from Carnegie Mellon I was THRILLED!

Whether you were accepted OR rejected, please post some stats (grades, test scores, extracurriculars, what your essays were about etc)

I've never been away from home for more than a week so I'm really nervous but excited at the same time. To those who know more about the program, is it difficult to get into? Will this help me a lot in applying to colleges? Has anyone attended before? How was it?

Thanks so much and whoever was accepted, hope to see you there :)

i got wait listed, which i guess is better than getting rejected. Anyone know the percentage of people wait listed?

I was accepted.
SAT: 2000
Straight A’s
GPA: 4.17
Extracurriculars: Science Fair, Science Olympiad, Turkish Folk Dance, Girls’ Basketball, Volleyball, Softball, Tennis, Yearbook Club, National Honor Society, GT, etc.
Essays about my hispanic background and how I’ve liked math and science since I was little.
Btw, I’m from San Antonio, Texas.
How about you? And where are you from?

Dunno, but I’m doing AP/EA this summer! So excited!

I got a 1930 on my SATs (first time) and I have like As with a B this year in american studies. I’m from Connecticut :)

they just called, i got in! woooot.
I only had an 1870 on SATs and a 26 ACT, looks like things you do on the side really make a big difference, see you all there!

I’m going this year, I’m really looking forward to it!

I have a 3.7 gpa (unweighted), 2090 SAT, 32 ACT, and have so far taken 8 AP/AICE classes.

For extracurriculars I have National Honor Society, Key Club, Technology Student Association, and president of my school’s robotics club. I think that one of the things that helped me get in was the fact that my team won the BotsIQ national battlebots competition.

I’m from Miami, and I’m going with two of my friends who also got accepted :)

I’m applying to the SAMS program this year as a rising junior and I’m pretty nervous! For those who got accepted last year, can you please give me any advice on the essays and how the experience was for you?
Thanks!

My D attended SAMS for the last 2 summers and I can tell you it changed her life. She was a top student but a “coaster.” SAMS gave her direction, taught her better work habits(their schedule runs from 8am to 9pm and can be brutal if you’re looking to excel) and time management.

She has made 3 meaningful friendships thru SAMS which has also helped her gain confidence as being exposed to those peers has taught her that she was capable of shooting higher for her college choices.

Yes, not only does the schedule and workload prepare you for college but attending SAMS does make you a more attractive student to the top schools provided you do enough work to earn decent grades. My D went from an 1800ish student looking at above average LACs to 2100+ and so far receiving likelys from 2 Ivies and an acceptance to a top LAC.

She had a rough start at SAMS but once she found her niche she thrived. Her positive experience there has reverberated throughout her life since. The SAMS staff is great, The CMU campus nice and the Pittsburgh area has alot to offer.

2 warnings though:

The dorms they use for the program have no AC(except for the lounge) and Pittsburgh during the summer can get quite muggy.

The food needs work. However, Pittsburgh has great eateries just minutes away by bus or cab from campus AND “Squirrel Hill,” is a brisk walk away which has decent food options.

I say as a parent of a 2-time SAMS alum that you’ll enjoy becoming part of the SAMS family. Good luck and have fun!
