Carnegie Mellon Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) and AP/EA 2018

I submitted my application early in January but just now got my teacher recommendation (had asked at the time of application though)… so now I’m all set and waiting for decisions!! Has anyone heard back yet?

Also, ak2018 , thank you for all the info you’ve pointed out, I’ve been watching this thread in the past month and you’ve said a lot of insightful things!

What number or e-mail do you guys contact at Carnegie Mellon for application status/questions? I’ve tried calling the office a few times in the past couple weeks and never got a response

They said that they have started reviewing the apps and decisions should be coming over the next few weeks. Have you guys/gals applied to any other programs?

My thanks also go to ak2018 for all the insight.

It seems like they keep changing the dates.

@succeed1253 That’s okay. My resume was also two pages. Also, if you get into SAMS, there is a Concepts of Mathematics class that you can take, if you place high enough. It’s not Calculus, it’s actually harder, but it is a rigorous, proof-based that is only for those who do well enough on the math placement test. A lot of people did the class last year and found it to be a rewarding experience. One girl from SAMS, who got into MIT and CalTech and did the class, had a large wall of proofs and kept everything she did. I think I can show you guys a picture of it. But yeah, the class is tough, but so were the rest. If you really want to go past Calc AB, I’d go for AP/EA. I’m in Calc BC now and the difference between AB and BC is minuscule. I will say this however: CMU Calculus classes do not match up with AP Calc AB and BC. Their Differential and Integral Calc class is pretty much Calc BC. I would keep that in mind. Lastly, AP/EA is easier to get into, the challenge is getting the full-ride scholarship to be able to go for free. If you want a more diverse experience, I’d go for SAMS as AP/EA was full of wealthier kids and is, arguably, only impressive if you get to go for free.

@astromae2001 @gothamreal Thanks. I just feel like it is my duty as an alum to help out in anyway I can.

I would also like to note that you will have to do a math class placement test if you get into SAMS and if you are planning to go into a particular class, I would say to start studying/reviewing for the class at least a month before SAMS. You will not be able to choose which class to enter.

@ARIVERA1 Yeah, I remember the inconsistency last year. They are probably just extremely busy with college apps this time of year.

Awesome, do we get to pick out what science classes (physics, biology…) we take? Do we take several different science classes or do we pick just one or two? Just curious

@astromae2001 you give them an ordered list for which class you want (chem, bio, or physics) and they try to give you first choice. pretty much everyone gets first choice unless you don’t tell them at all what you want

For my resume, should I only list my ECs? or awards as well?

Do I get college credit? and do I have to take SAT prep?

@CoolChem List out both. You can also look for a resume template online, as well as on Google Docs or Microsoft Word, to make it look more professional.

@succeed1253 Yes and yes.

I’m really confused how the recommendation works. I submitted the initial application and requested a recommendation from my teacher before I submitted it. Now, after I’ve submitted it, my teacher told me she submitted my recommendation. The problem is that there’s no indication that they actually received the recommendation at this point. It gives me an option to upload a recommendation, but how do I know the recommendation was successfully sent?

@esperantist you should receive an email letting you know they received the recommendation in a couple of days.

I also have some additional questions that @esperantist mentioned but were never answered. Do you have to upload the recommendation yourself on top of the recommender because on the upload materials, it is listed as required to be uploaded by you.

@therealestkevin Yes, you do upload the LOR yourself.

Also, here’s a SAMS 2017 video uploaded by a girl who recently got accepted by CMU: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhxefNQKSEM

@ak2018 wait really? My recommender sent the LOR but I did not upload the LOR myself. I sent an email to admission@andrew.cmu.edu and told me that all my materials were received and completed and up for review.

@mathnerd101 That’s fine. It’s just easier for them to receive it in the supplemental portal. So that they don’t have to dig through emails to find it.

@ak2018 What if my teacher wants it to remain confidential?

Will CMU send out emails to both people who get accepted into the program and those who don’t?

Has anyone been accepted
