Carnegie Mellon Summer Programs for Diversity

Also if anyone who participated in the program wants to tell me about their experiences in the program on what they liked didn’t like that would be greatly appreciated. thank you

Getting into the the theatre program throught summer for diversity seems to be very difficult because there are so many students who are willing to pay to attend because Cmu is one of the top theatre programs in the country. But who knows! You should definitely apply! And through SAMS I met a number of students in the drama program and they seed to really enjoy the experience. They live with all te other pre college students but attend different classes during the day.

If you are a junior are you doing the program again? If you are a senior are/have you applying/applied to go there for college?

I am a senior this year and although I do love CMU I was accepted into Stanford Early Action and didnt end up applying… But I definitely recommend applying to SAMS and CMU

Question about SAMS/APEA because I’m kind of fuzzy… applying to APEA through CM Summer Programs for Diversity is different from applying to the CM precollege program, right? What is the difference - just money? (I’m really most worried about how much money the program is going to cost if I get in through the diversity program.) Does that mean the APEA applications through the Diversity program is more selective? Can you only get into the free APEA program by applying to SAMS?

I want to apply to SAMS, but I’d rather get into APEA- but SAMS is free and APEA seems harder to get into, so I’m not sure which I should put as my first choice. Would putting SAMS as a second choice lower my chances of getting in?

Sorry for all these questions… If someone could answer some (or any) of them, I’d be very grateful!

Does anyone know of any other summer programs whose application deadlines is April 1st or later that is similar to SAMS? Like they have some math and science classes but also SAT prep and whatnot? Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide insight

I think all the programs under the diversity program are very selective because it costs significantly less than the precollege program. Also u need to understand that apea and sams are separate programs. Apea is probably more selective than sams because it college credit classes. If you really cant decide apply to both it just another essay.
As far as similar programs with a later deadline goes, i think ur out of luck. From what ive researched this is as late as it gets. I could very well be wrong. Hope this helps.

You get college credit in SAMS as well, plus SAMS accepts fewer students… I think it may be more selective but I am not sure. I am a SAMS alum so I may be a little biased but SAMS truly was the best experience of my life and I would recommend applying for it as your first choice. SAMS only has 70 students compared to the around 300 precollege students and therefore, you really are able to get to know everyone. You become a SAMS Fam :)

SAMS alums! How is the test prep program at SAMS? Is it sufficient for my Pre-Junior-Year SAT prep? Thanks!

You get what you make out of it. I’m a two-year SAMS alum and I definitely did not take advantage of the sat prep class the first year and my improvement was minimal at best, but the second year I decided to put in more effort and my scores definitely reflected that. The course won’t give you all the tools in order to obtain a perfect score, but it does provide a very nice framework from which you can definitely work off of during your junior year.

I also would like to recommend the SAMS program to all who are interested. It truly has been a life-changing experience, and if for nothing else, you will at least have a college-like experience before you actually reach college so that you will be more prepared and able to take advantage of opportunities as soon as you get on campus.
Oh, and hi Nikke! :)

So for the first essay, how specific were your academic and personal goals???

I sending my app in on Wednesday and i was very specific in my personal and academic goals.

haha thanks frinkila. I finished my app yesterday and just saw your response today. Do any you guys know if SAMS take any asian or white students? cuz from Ive heard, the program is mostly african american (from kids who attended the previous years)

Hahah they do accept white and Asian students… It is a diversity program, therefore, it’s a very diverse group of students.

Hi Ricky  lol these lucky kids get a chance at going to SAMS 2013… Wish we were so lucky smh

Your welcome thisplacesux. I hope we both get in. I have to say I really enjoyed the application process. (I know I sound like a total nerd) But, I’m very proud of myself for the work I put into my essays. At least I can take out that I know how I’m going to write my college essays. Did/ does anyone feel this way? Also do any of the alums remember the orientation day and want to share there experience?

hahah oh good old orientation day… at first it was kind of awkward because most of us didnt know each other so we stood in circles and asked each other questions. Then we went and participated in this huge orientation activity thing in the gym with all the pre-college kids. It was a good time. Most people are just like you and dont know anyone else there. But there are the returning kids (aka people like Mathfreak) who already have friends… cool kids smh. But really it is an amazing experience! I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks, also does anyone know if you came to the program through the diversity program or are you addressed with everyone else as a precollege kid?

I kind of missed the deadline today, do you guys think they will still accept the application if it’s postmarked tomorrow?

^ I’m not sure if anyone can answer that for you here. I would email precollege@andrew.cmu.edu and ask. I sent an email last night and got a reply this morning, so I think they respond pretty quickly.
