Carnegie Mellon Summer Programs for Diversity

Do you have to be a rising Senior to apply for AP/EA. Because I am not sure what SAMS has to offer me, what is the math like? How high level? I am a sophomore this year, and I might apply to Diversity for summer '08. How competitive is it, I mean both SAMS and AP/EA, which is more competitive. What range PSAT, SAT, or ACT are acceptable. What math and science courses are kinda pre-reqs or basic requirements?

No you dont have to be a rising senior for ap/ea, though i didnt get in during my sophomore year. Diversity AP/EA is definitely a competitive program. I know a few kids with 2300+ SAT scores in it. i am sure (personal experience) more competitive to get in than harvard ssp and the rest (yale, brown, stanford, etc) of the university programs. as for SAMS, i dont think it is much of a challenge at all. i know a few who were in SAMS who were bored with what they were doing.
as for admission requirements, i had a 220 on PSAT when i applied. if you get into ap/ea, you will be taking college courses with normal college students and other high school rising seniors, so the pre-reqs will vary from course to coruse. for example, the humanity courses generally have no pre-req at all. calc 1, 2, 3, physics, chem, bio, and other advanced science-/comp sci-related courses have pre-reqs as far as i know.
i thought its definitely a summer well spent. i strongly recommend it.

is this program really hard to get in? the SAMS one..

wait...what science projects are you guys all talking about? Is it something you do when you get into SAMS? like they give a project to work on?

i got into CMU AP/EA as a rising junior. i believe i was one of the... two (?) rising juniors who attended the AP/EA program ~ everyone else was going into senior year. the other non-credit programs had many more younger ppl.

my psat score (from my sophomore year) was 199. the acceptance rate for AP/EA (does not include AP/EA diversity, i think) in 2006 was just over 50% (102 enrolled out of 191 applied)

DO YOU HAVE TO BE A FREAKEEING CITIZEN/RESIDENCE TO APPLY FOR AP/EA FOR EVERY DANG SUMMER PROGRAM IN THIS COUNTRY?? (sry for yelling i'm just ****ed cuz i can't do any of them and i can't even get paid/get scholarships/fin aid even if they do accept non-resdients.. seriously bummed :(

no, you don't have to be a citizen. there were plenty of international students at AP/EA last year.

I doubt it. There were two other rising juniors (me and another kid). They have a fairly high acceptance rate because they need to fill the classes. There is no better place for CS. You will get 1-1 time with the profs/TAs who know their stuff.

~three juniors out of around 100 ap/ea (assuming a similar acceptance number as in 2006) ppl. that's still very few.

did you, by any chance, take intro/intermediate programming with mr. hoffman?

Anyone who's been to the music program? What's it like?

very musical...no j/k...i've never been.

To me, the "diversity" tag seems misleading. I assume the majority will go for AP/EA and SAMS. But those programs look very... commonplace, in lack of a better word. The AP/EA even sounds like a propaganada. I mean, they're preparing for their Early Action program! And why would you want to take college credits? We're still young! I think what's more important is we pursue what we've been devoting to or explore new fields while we're still in high school. That's why the music program looks so appealing to me.

^I don't understand your mentality. There are tons of high school students that take courses for college credit (what are AP exams for again), in addition to classes at community colleges or at universities over the summer. Both of the CMU Diversity programs are great from an academic standpoint.

why would you NOT want to take college credits? if you transfer them to whatever college you end up, you can have a slightly lessened course load. i'd rather not kill myself taking 8 or so classes in my freshman year ~ best ease into it with those pre-earned credits, right?

the "diversity" part of the program name doesn't refer to diversity in program enrollment, btw. it refers to ethnicity, geographic location, social status... etc.

Why would you want to spend your summer taking college credits when you're already taking a load of AP's at your school? It may not be the case everywhere but I assume most people doing this are probably taking a load of APs at their schools. I mean, slow down. There's more to life than trying to get ahead. That's what I'm saying but I guess a lot of people would counter-argue and disagree.

wat does it mean when it asks for 2 recs from "subject-area" teachers?
does it mean you have to ask music teachers if you are applying for music?

because im thinking of applying for the drama program but our school only has one "drama" teacher
but we have other teachers (such as a math and english teacher) who are heavily involved in the drama department but dont actually teach drama as a class.

can someone clarify?

call them up and ask.

I believe that it means it has to be a teacher that teaches a subject...like, it can't be your gifted coordinator or someone like that....but I'm not sure.

hey is anyone out there applying for the drama program?
is it hard to get in? what are the numbers?

the website wasn't very informative... mailed the 'contact' person, but he hasn't applied..

i sent in my stuff today!!!

gosh, i just found out that international students WITH greencard are allowed. the drama dep. said to send it in anyways, but i am scared that they are going to seperate me into the pre-college pool where i need to pay. and i don't have $6000 you know... sigh

we'll just see what happens..

feel like im talking to myself. is anyone around?

I Mailed My stuff today also!!!!!

...and now we wait...
