CARNEGIE MELLON vs BOSTON COLLEGE

Hi, I want to be a finance major. What is a better school to attend Boston College or Carnegie Mellon?

They’re pretty close in Finance. There are several differences that may sway you one way or another. Tepper is far smaller than CSOM, so that may be a positive or negative. But both schools are very different outside of academics, for example, BC has an excellent hockey team. I would go with fit and costs.

What type of finance career are you looking at?

CMU has a more quantitative focus and would be the better choice for S&T and computational finance careers.

BC seems to be more of a classic choice for corporate finance jobs (Fortune 500) and investment banking.

What is the net cost for each? You also need to consider that.

I want to go into investment banking or asset management. I like CMU but my father, an IT project manager on Wallstreet, thinks that it is too small for me. I was expecting to get into NYU, where I was a good fit and expected to get in. However, I did not. How is the Boston College Experience at Carrol school as compared to that at NYU Stern?

PS: my dad wants me to transfer to NYU later

Contact the career offices at both and see which firms recruit at each. That will give you a feel for what types of areas you can get into. I always though of BC as more of a Corporate Finance as well but get the data.
