Carnegie or UCSD

I have a problem here. I've lived in California my whole life and I have loved the weather and atmosphere of it all. I went to school in a primarily asian High school. I am asian, but I have some white friends in the club volleyball team that I play on. Race is not a HUGE issue, but going from a sea of asians to a sea of whites would be a big difference.

Carnegie is in Pittsburgh and that is an entirely different environment with different people. While UCSD is still California and within some familiarity.

I feel like Carnegie is academically superior to UCSD, but I would be more comftorable in UCSD rather than Carnegie.

What do you guys think? What would you choose? (considering where you are from too though)

Thanks

You'd experience lots of new things at CMU. You'd get weather and white folks - which isn't a particularly bad combination. ;)

Granted, I'm half-asian, so race hasn't ever really been something I'm too worried about...white folks think of me as asian and asian folks think of me as white.

It also depends what you want to study.... What school within CMU did you get into?

I'm not exactly sure what I want to do, but I'm leaning toward being an Actuary. Which would mean like a Math/Statistics major or something like that.

I got into the Mathematics Department at Carnegie.

-foxfirebass: how have you been doing at carnegie? do you think its great? academic wise, social scene wise?

Haha, I haven't gotten in arc - I just have a buddy that goes there and loves to tell me about it. ;p

I've applied to both of those schools. Haven't heard back from CMU but I did get into UCSD and UCSB. I'm from New York and for me, the California location is more appealing; I like the prospect of being near Silicon Valley where everything is for my major. I am working on my company startup in technology and to be near so many historic technology startups is a hopeful prospect, especially considering the skilled engineers and seed investors of the area.

One thing you will have to consider is the weather. I haven't visited UCSD but I was looking forward to a bit of a warmer adjustment. Pittsburgh is COLD. It's near rivers and mountains so look forward to bitterly cold winters. It's also a very sports-oriented city they take their football very seriously. In terms of spending in Pittsburgh I've heard its like "going to a foreign country" because everything is cheaper than you might expect (compared to New York City). A pint of beer is cheaper than water for example and pasta might only cost you 4 dollars.

Overall they are both respectable engineering schools just depends what your looking for and the type of person you are. Hope this helps.

P.S: My first CC Post!

Great post Fronz. Really appreciate it.

As of now, I'm leaning towards UCSD. One, probably because alot of my friends are going and Two just because of the weather.

I don't think I could stand 4 years of bitter cold.

By the way, I've visited UCSD and it is BEAUTIFUL.
Although when it gets cloudy it is a bit dreary. But just google UCSD on images and you'll see what I mean.

Good luck on getting your business started fronz.

Heh thanks. glad i could help. maybe I'll see you at UCSD although im completely undecided

Lolz, I'm actually white, but I've been going to a predominantly asian school for the past 4 years. I tend to panic when I go to the mainland and see a sea of white people, but I'm probably going to MCS anyway. Don't let race deter you from a good school. Part of the college experience is going outside of your comfort zone and experiencing new things. If weather is a big factor for you I don't know what you should do; but personally, I think Mellon's the better choice.
