Any recommendations about the most comfortable way to carry laptops
and books around? Are their strong preferences for backpacks, wheelies, messenger bags?

Do most students bring laptops to class? Any specifics would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, ottoline. My son uses a laptop backpack -- Swiss Gear Synergy Dell : Swiss Gear (Wenger) Swissgear Synergy Laptop carrying backpack : Laptop/Notebook Accessories : Home & Home Office

I don't know if he always carries his laptop to classes, though. I'll let some students weigh in on that.

I have a canvas messenger bag and bought a neoprene sleeve for my MacBook. It works rather well for me. I always carry my laptop with me, but I rarely have it out in class. Some people only use their laptops to take notes, others (like me) still use pen and paper.

I took my MacBook to some classes freshman year, but none at all last year. I find it a distraction more than anything else. When I carry it to the library to do work, though, I use an Adidas laptop backpack.

For class, I usually just carried a notebook and pen (no bag).

For studying at the library, I packed up a laptop backpack with everything I needed.

Don't get one of those wheelie backpacks. Really. Don't.

I'll echo jenskate. Don't get a wheelie backpack.

For classes where taking doesn't require making diagrams or symbols (e.g., not math and chemistry classes), I usually brought my laptop. You have to be careful, or you might get distracted by Facebook or something. For my math and chem classes, I just brought a notebook and a pen. I never needed my books for classes. If you're going to get a backpack, get either a smaller backpack (with a laptop case is nice), or a carrying bag with a strap. The smaller your bag, the less you'll put in it, which is usually a good thing.

Whether or not you take your laptop to class is up to you, not what the majority of students do. Writing on paper helps me thoroughly memorize information, and it keeps me concentrated during a lecture. So I write. If there was a class in which the prof lectured too fast, I'd type.
