On the Collegeboard website, it said that Duke freshmen were allowed to have cars. Where exactly would one store or park a car if you lived in the dorms? Would anyone recommend this? I am considering taking my car to college.

Parking as a freshman is very convenient - right next to your dorm. Parking as a sophomore is considerably less convenient.

As a junior or senior, it depends on where you are living. West (not convenient), Central (very convenient), or off-campus as a senior (mandatory).

As an addendum to what mike said, I'll add that, while you certainly have the opportunity to park close to your dorm, on some nights you might find yourself unlucky and have to park a considerable distance away.

EDIT: As far as recommending it goes, well it definitely gives you an advantage in being able to get a job or volunteering opportunity farther off campus, and I think it's nice to have so you can do things like go to Southpoint or Target without having to rely on someone else. That said, I don't have a car, and for the most part I've gotten along just fine.

Yeah and when you have to park further away it could pose a danger to you late at night. I don't mean to scare you it's just something to consider - that the majority of robberies reported happen off East Campus.

Thanks for the info guys.

Well, Alex, you'd never park OFF of East campus - you'd park farther away from your dorm, but at least the red zone parking lots should all be reasonably safe - I believe.

So when Sophomore year arrives, will I be stuck in regards to parking? What are the options?

There's one option, and it's inconvenient but hardly atrocious.

You will park in the blue zone, the lots behind wilson gym. They're a little bit far, especially if you park in the back of them, but certainly it doesn't seem to deter large numbers of student from owning cars.

true mike, i guess it's been a while since freshman year, plus i didn't have a car back then.
