My Mid will be attending Summer school this year. He is now a 3rd classman. Is he allowed to have his car on campus for that period before he goes to sea in July?

On campus: No
Off campus: Yes
This is how it was last year

On campus parking (the lot next to the rugby field) is only available to seniors.
He will have to talk to some homeowner in Great Neck/Kings Point and ask for a parking spot (generally either pay cash or do chores).

Here’s my question:

If a midshipman had a hard enough time during the academic year without a car to require summer school how are they going to do “with” a car? From an academic/studying standpoint I would recommend against having a car during summer school. If they need to get off campus there will be plenty of other people there who they can bum rides with. Otherwise all the car will be is a distraction away from academics.

When I had summer school many a year ago I managed to get my car in the senior lot for that summer…wasn’t a problem. And KP2001 sometimes these guys are in summer school because they were forced into college math requireing them to take Calculus 2 during summer school. It definately was a help being able to get away to the beach for a couple hours. And the only time they have liberty is if their grades in the class is good enough to reward them with liberty. If they aren’t doing to hot they won’t let them go out. But other then that it was actually a pretty good time.

KP2001, The only reason I asked about the car was that classes are only held in the morning and that, because it the Summer, it would be nice to go to the beach for a few hours and decompress. My Mid did well in most of his classes, he just had problems with physics. He will be taking physics 2 in July and then heading off to sea for 3 months. I don’t want KP to be a Summer prison. I hope you are correct about there “being pleny of rides” available. Mass transit is not great going to Jones beach.

To each their own. I’m definitely not blasting anyone for being in summer school, but only trying to remind folks of the importance of doing well in summer school. Failing summer school usually equals setback or worse, getting disenrolled. With a compressed class schedule the class comes at you faster than before and it isn’t any easier. To me, the pain of not being able to decompress at the beach is worth the knowledge that I would likely study more if I was stuck on campus.

Now would I have had the same ideas if I was the midshipan in summer school…no way, I would want the car for sure :)

No disagreement with your comments. I told him he needs to do well or the consequences would be dire. He is an adult though so he needs to find out somethings on his own.

Actually that is a very good point nmlcfp. Have to grow up at some point and realize life is full of choices. I’ll give you a +1 for that one :)

Thanks. It is tough to stop riding him like we did when he was in high school. But as you said, he has to grow up sometime.
