Having a car on campus

My son will be starting for summer B and we are debating whether he will take his car or not. Thoughts??

I say take it. It’s not absolutely necessary, but it makes life easier. I’ve had my car since first semester and don’t know what I’d do without it!

Well, first of all, where is he going to be living? on or off campus? I have my car but even if I didn’t Id look at it in a positive way: Saving money on gas, saving money on insurance. There are also many ways to get around with shuttles. Not paying for a parking decal.
Is he planning to take road trips to down town, looking to have more liberty? those are questions to consider as well.
I cant imagine not having a car, but then I’m 24.

Car is essential

I didn’t have a car my first year…it wasn’t too bad.

My daughter is also starting Summer B as a freshman - she is living on-campus, and we are planning on leaving her car with her there. Not that she will need to use it much, but we live 2 hours away, and this will make it easier if she wants to come home for a visit during the session.

I didn’t have my car with me freshman year and it was perfectly fine. Whether you want to bring it or not is purely your decision, however, from experience I will tell you that it is NON-ESSENTIAL.

Unless your child currently drives a lot (to go shopping, hang out, etc) he/she probably will not miss it. However, if you live in an apartment-style dorm (with a kitchen), having a car will be much more necessary especially to go to buy groceries and whatnot.

Although there are methods of alternative transportation Orlando is very spread out. Personally as a freshman I was very very happy to have a car on campus. My roommate didn’t have her’s until 2nd semester and was always asking me to drive her to Wal-Mart, Publix, etc.

Orlando is pretty spread out so I would recommend a car (unless your son wants to be confined at school). It’s not necessarily essential, but it makes it much simpler to run errands, go shopping, entertainment, etc.
