Decision: Accepted
$23,000 renewable scholarship. Too lazy to fill out all the other stuff. This was the first college I heard back from; happy to start off my decisions with an acceptance!

@ohayitsme
My acceptance letter had a personalized post script too! I think it really showed in my application that I love music (my common app essay topic was the content place and I wrote about the band room) and my post script read
P.S. Don’t forget to pack your clarinet for Cleveland this summer!
(I indicated that I was interested in doing marching band, and the band camp is in summer). But yeah, it was a really cool personal touch.

I had a post script message too, about my online tutoring. Sorry i won’t fill in the stuff but mainly 2190 SAT 3.873 UWGPA and good essays. 22k renewable scholarship :)

Strengths: GPA, SAT II, Essay and Recs

Weaknesses: Volunteering and Extracurriculars weren’t anything special

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I visited there and I displayed a lot of interest in the university and expressed interest in research, so I think they really liked that

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Indiana University, Purdue, Ohio State, and U of Louisville. Waiting to hear back from Wellesley and Smith

Case is my main backup if I don’t get into Wellesley. So I’m really happy I got into such a good science university!!

I have been doing some reading about the area and a bit concerned with all the theft/burglary incidents. Can anyone tell me if this is happening to students on campus or is it on the outskirts of the campus. I know that the school is very close to some very sketchy neighborhoods to say the least but it is worrisome to read that you have to be smart and always walk with people when it gets dark. It gets dark at 6:00pm, this just does not seem reasonable. We will be visiting shortly but would like to hear from current students, past students and/or parents who currently have a child at Case or who have had a child at Case.

I know it is an urban campus and common sense is needed but I would think that walking alone at 6:00pm or even 7:00 or 8:00 should be safe.

Murphy1008: some of the incidents are on campus, and most are off campus. For example, we have gotten 8 security alerts this past semester. 2 took place on campus (a student assaulted another student in the football field bleachers, and there was an armed robbery on the humanities quad). Most of the security alerts we have gotten this year are cell phone thefts.

Yes, you are right about Case being close to East Cleveland. Students should definitely avoid East Cleveland at night or when alone. But as long as you don’t go out alone at night, you really should be okay. It does get dark around 6, but after 7PM students can call a Safe Ride vehicle to take them to their destination.

Many good schools are located in areas with high crime rates (University of Chicago, Columbia, UPenn, Harvard) but that shouldn’t stop a student from attending one of these schools, as long as they are responsible and have some common sense.

When it gets late, get means of transportation (SafeRide, campus shuttle), travel in groups, don’t wander off campus, and don’t do anything stupid, and you won’t get mugged. It really isn’t that hard but incidents still happen. The campus surrounds a hospital so it’s not like it’s in the middle of a shantytown or anything. The biggest problem seems to be bike theft, which may or may not disconcert you.

I have a first year daughter at Case and she said she has not felt unsafe so far…there are always people around and if they are at the library late they will wait for each other to walk back to the dorms…the campus is fairly large and self- contained, but as mentioned before it has University Hospitals basically on campus and a major street runs through campus so there are certainly public access points but I really have no major concerns. University Circle and Uptown areas are well lit and well populated- good common sense is necessary regardless of the school you attend. I think you will be pleasantly surprised and impressed by the campus itself and Case in general…the positives far outweigh any negatives and my D couldn’t be happier with her choice! (and she has led a very sheltered life thus far, far from Cleveland!)

Torchwood thanks for the information though very unsettling to me to learn that an armed robbery took place on campus. Please tell me that it happened at 2:00am in the morning and not 7:00pm in the evening.

We will be visiting soon so I’ll wait to see for myself. I went to high school in NYC and understand about being responsible and using common sense so it is comforting to know that as long as she makes smart choices she should do O.K. Again, thanks!

The armed robbery happened at 5:00PM, but it happened once classes were over for the semester, so my guess is the campus was probably pretty deserted. I have heard that at all schools, a lot of crime tends to happen during breaks because there aren’t a lot of people around.
Sorry, don’t mean to scare anyone with this information, and I generally feel very safe at Case, but I think it’s better to be honest!

I appreciate your honesty Torchwood and yes it makes sense that if the campus is deserted it is a perfect opportunity for crime to occur. That piece of information certainly will not sway us not to consider Case since my daughter is very much interested in their nursing program. As a nursing student she will be doing clinicals and I want to be sure she will be safe. As a parent I am just doing my due diligence! It is a great school and like you said many respected schools happen to be near areas with high crime. Thanks for your input! Can you tell me about the safe rides?
