Case Western Reserve University- Fit

My daughter was accepted with a very nice Scholarship. I will post more details in the acceptance thread soon. (We have been traveling most of this weekend.) But, I wanted to make sure I thanked everyone on this thread who helped us along the way, since I started this thread several weeks ago.

She has 100% decided to attend CWRU. She loves the school. And we do too. We will use the money we had set aside for other college application fees to pay the CWRU deposit. It is going to be a wonderful Christmas and New Year’s.

Thank you!!

Congrats. I have an engineering and music dual major (I know you mentioned that possibility early on). He is enjoying all that Case has to offer. Best of luck to your daughter. We are all happy with CWRU

@wizard2, congrats to your daughter.

@wizard2, Congrats to you and your DD. I was thinking of you this week and hoping you’d hear good news!

My DS is home for winter break and was talking about a new Case option known as the “secondary major” that’s just opening up this year. It’s more than a minor but not quite a full double major. I believe he’ll be pursuing it (engineering major, foreign language secondary major). For the secondary major you just need to fulfill the specific departmental requirements but not any distribution/breadth requirements that go along with it. It makes it more doable.

Best wishes to you and DD! I hope it is a satisfying choice.

Thank you for the kind notes. It is indeed a huge relief to have this settled.

@jollymama we had not heard about this new “Secondary Major” option. That sounds like something that would be perfect for my daughter. She is going to look into it. Thank you again for all of your help.

HI Wizard1, we are in a similar situation, very impressed with Case. I am looking into the costs though. Did you reach a conclusion, I was wondering and if yes, what factors mattered, what convinced you that Case is the best choice. Thank you, if you are ok with sharing of course.

My daughter did decide to attend CWRU. After she was accepted EA and offered 30K+ in merit aid, she really did not want to apply anywhere else. We had planned to apply to W&M (in-state), Harvard, Vanderbilt, and Duke as they were all sending her an enormous amount of information, but in the end, she just felt that if she were accepted to any of them (we had visited them all and others) she would still want to attend CWRU. We did take a look at the costs, especially with regard to what W&M might be, but we thought they would be pretty close. So, we have paid the deposit, and she will be visiting an admitted student weekend, to hopefully start meeting other incoming freshmen.

As CWRU moved to the top of her list, we visited the campus twice. Once in June and once for an open house in October. On both trips we stayed an extra day or two to experience Cleveland. We stayed at the Tudor Arms hotel, which is near the campus, so we could walk around the area some during our visit. We were very impressed by the friendliness of the staff and faculty we met, by the tremendous amount of resources (especially that all of the UGs we met said they really get to use them), and the campus environment & city of Cleveland. My daughter is really interested in science/engineering, but also loves music and wanted a place where the music department is supportive of a double major. She did not sense that support at Duke or Vanderbilt, to the level that she did at CWRU. Maybe it is because of its historical roots, but the faculty at CWRU she/we spoke to were very supportive of her exploring a double major and also seemed to get the importance of the liberal arts.

The friendliness of the faculty/staff is not to be underestimated in our decision making process. Three examples (but there are others). First, on one trip my daughter contacted the faculty member who teaches the lessons for her band instrument and he met up with her to give her an hour long sample lesson, on one of the trips to CWRU we arrived a little late for the last scheduled tour of the new Think Box, the security guard at the complex made a few calls, and found us a student guide who was in no hurry to show off all the cool features of the new building, and on one visit we ate lunch on campus at the Melt Shop, and while we were waiting for our sandwiches, the counter person told us all sorts of wonderful things about the school. There was also the really friendly librarian who gave my daughter a quick tour and the music department chair who chatted with us when we wondered through that building. We also spent quite a bit of time reading about colleges on this site, and really see negative comments about CWRU. I am sure there are really friendly folks at every school, we just met a lot more of them at CWRU. In the end, I think that is probably the main factor.

Wizard, My son, J, also applied early to Case Western. Before visiting the campus, Case was not high on the list, but after seeing the campus and learning about the culture it became one of his top two choices, along with Rose-Hulman. What he really liked was that students were not locked into a major until well into sophomore year, and students were encouraged to have double majors or minors (he applied as a MechE, but is also interested in BioChem). Our tour guide was a MechE major with a minor in Econ.

I could not agree more that fit is more important than rankings or status. J also applied to UofM and CMU, and if he is accepted at all four he would pick CWRU or RHIT. We live in MI, so getting accepted by UofM is the Holy Grail. J’s friends are all STEM nerds and they are applying to Big 10 schools that are strong in engineering and science (UofM, MSU, Purdue, UIUC). Only a few Tiger parents from my son’s high school are wrapped up in the prestige schools.

With your daughter’s stats I would be amazed if she was not accepted by Case. You will have to tell us when she gets accepted in December. That would be a nice Christmas present, wouldn’t it?
