My daughter got full tuition scholarship at both CWRU and Kenyon. Both colleges are so unique that we are having a hard time making a decision !
Her goal is to go into med school with liberal arts education
CWRU -> Cleveland Clinic. This isn’t hard.
I have heard from some that the intimate environment at Kenyon makes for more involved faculty and better internship opportunities for students.
How nice to have two great choices tuition free!
It definitely is a great problem to have
Haven’t been able to talk to anyone from Kenyon to help compare the options.
She’d almost certainly get more individual attention at Kenyon. But medical volunteering etc would be limited to summers and breaks unless she has a car. There is a hospital in Mount Vernon, 20 mins away.
^^ Agree, what a nice dilemma. Your daughter must be truly stellar to have been offered full-tuition scholarships.
Excellent students can shine wherever they go–they create their own opportunities! So it comes down to a matter of personal preference … what does her heart say, and what does her head say?
Just to reassure you there are abundant chances for internships at Case, if she decides in that direction.
Thank you! She has been extremely lucky.
She loves the friendly atmosphere at Kenyon and the location of CWRU. Otherwise both schools have great academics and faculty.
@OHMomof2, She could most likely afford a car if that helps her get around. Not sure how good Kenyon is for science majors? I know that it excels in writing and arts.
There are several hospitals in Cleveland. But imo the better way to look at the choice is to consider all factors.
One doesn’t necessarily need to major in a STEM field to be on the pre-med track. Plenty of humanities/social science majors who were pre-meds…including my childhood pediatrician who was a history major at another Midwest LAC.
Most important is which campus/environment offers her the best chance to fulfill her goals and having a fulfilling undergraduate career not only to facilitate preparation for med school admissions, but also for its own sake.
She may also want to look at med school placements, but do so while keeping in mind sometimes the results may be due to self-selection as was the case at my LAC(Oberlin) where despite having strong natural science departments, most students tended to go on to become K-12 science teachers or scientists/science academics in universities with PhDs due to personal preferences…not go on to med school to become doctors.
You don’t need a STEM major to apply to medical school, but I think there are prereq courses needed. It looks like Kenyon does have advising for that - http://www.kenyon.edu/academics/departments-programs/health-professions/. But I can see the advantage of Case location for various medical opportunities during school. We felt the University Circle area seemed walkable.
I have a soft spot for Kenyon. The campus is exactly what a small college campus should be. You don’t need to be near a major hospital to get some experience for med school – I know kids who went to Williams & St. Olaf who went on to med school. They were able to get some experience in the summers. She can get some bio research experience at Kenyon if she wants to as well (one of my kids who was admitted there went on a tour specifically for science majors, and we asked a lot of questions about that). She should pick whichever seems like the experience she would enjoy most, I think.
I attended Case over 30 years ago, and it has changed a lot since then (improved in many ways). My nephew attended their med school. There is not only the Cleveland Clinic nearby, but also University Hospitals right on campus. Several of my engineering friends went on to med school. I had a friend at Kenyon, and by senior year she hated being on a small campus in the middle of nowhere. I would think the large difference between the campus environments should help her make her decision.
Interesting, my D was torn between CWRU and Oberlin and after much soul searching, she chose Oberlin. She was looking for a place where she would encounter a critical mass of intellectually engaged students, and both delivered. My D really liked the University Circle area and all of the cultural opportunities it provided but also liked Oberlin’s artsy eclecticism. If she were pre-med or more decisively STEM-directed, I would have urged her to attend Case.
Will your daughter have a car? If so, that would make Kenyon more viable for pursuing pre-med and related hospital work. I visited with my D and she found the campus and town to be too small and isolated - this from a kid who found Oberlin to be just right.
Congrats on having two wonderful and affordable choices. She will find great professors and fellow students at both.
@mamabear1234 Thank you for the input ! Looks like she is leaning towards Case. Hopefully this is the best decision for her.
@mamabear1234 Thanks ! She is going for CWRU. Hopefully its the best decision for her.
Sorry! Didn’t realize I posted twice
She had a choice between two great options. It sounds like she chose the one she feels is best for her.
