Case Western vs Northeastern vs U Mass-Amherst

Down to the wire on making a decision, my son is looking at mechanical engineering, and likes all three schools - we are mass residents, so cost is good at U Mass - is the cost worth a school like Case or NU? How do you decide which is the best education experience?

Is the cost difference is more than 5K per year go to UMASS. If not then Case.

The cost difference is about:
U Mass $18,000
NU and Case both around $48

Is Case a more solid education than U Mass? - it’s hard to get past brand-name and reputation, and U Mass I hear is good - more mixed student range, and NU is good for landing a job, and Case is good for grad school -

I think it comes down to costs. I’m not to familiar with Case Western engineering program. NEU and Umass are very good. NEU has the slight edge but if the cost differences are large I would opt with Umass. It’s in state and you can also take advanatge of the consortium.

Edit:

I just read your cost for each school, go with Umass. Umass will offer you a great education.

I would (obviously) argue for Case, especially for engineering. Its a very rigorous, yet well-regarded program, and your son would definitely get a great education there. I don’t know anything about engineering at the other schools. However, if cost is important to you, then UMass may be the best choice.

casespartan, i find it hard to cough up 48k for case when Umass has a great engineering program. Academically i would say Umass is equal to Case for Ugrad. Although Umass is gross looking. 18k @ umass sounds great to me.

The coop experience (and pay) at NU could trump the Umass cost difference. And the cost difference may be less as mass budget spins downhill.

Also consider the Umass party and sports dominance. Is it a good fit?

Uh UMASS. That is too huge of a cost difference

Really, do you think that Case and U Mass are comparable?

It’s seems that the curriculum is established by the accrediting board, so I’m not even sure how to evaluate the academics for engineering. Do you think that name recognition is important for jobs and graduate school, because I do wonder if that’s what you are paying for, or if the education really is substantially different.

That is a lot of money. Use that money for enrichment, graduate school, etc. You’ll get much more bang for the buck.
