Cash Price of Meal Swipe?

I asked this in another thread but it got buried.

Does anyone know what the regular cash price of a meal swipe is (barring any specials - the normal daily price) of lunch and dinner?

Here is the thread:

I looked and looked for the price of the meals and this is the only info I could find.

I would do anything to help out Class2012Mom!:)

So would I! She’s a gem!

Thanks - I knew I had found the info online before. I wonder if the fact they took the info down means the price will not remain the same this year.

OK, this means for upperclassmen who are not required to have a meal plan, if we choose the Bama 55 and gamble our students will not eat 90 meals - and they wind up eating the 90 meals, it will cost us an extra $91.35 (assuming dinner prices) plus the 4 extra bonus meals we would have gotten for free had we chosen the Bronze 90 in the first place.

Decisions, decisions…

Edited: I’m reminded (thanks!) that we can upgrade later without penalty, so in that case, all we are gambling are the bonus 4 free combo meals. Think we are sticking with the Bama 55.

Awwwwww - I’m so touched. Actually these days I think I’m touched in the head, mostly, but I do appreciate the kinds words. :)

^That was funny. What’s even funnier though is that a lot of the food they pictured as being poor alternatives to dining hall food (pizza, spaghetti, takeout) came from UA’s dining halls, likely Lakeside as the pizza is partially burnt. Lakeside has a brick oven rather than a pizza oven and the pizzas will get burnt if left in too long.

That video definitely brightened my morning! We are knee deep in packing here today, so the comic relief was appreciated. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for the video, Southlander. The young man in the video is a great actor; I expected him to crack up when delivering his lines. Yum! Bacon with sprinkles, and butter?

I love your observations SEA_Tide! I hope all is well with you.

Good luck with your packing and move-in, MereMom.

That video is funny! And it explains this:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-alabama/1537447-bama-dining-call-all-aspiring-actors.html

So I totally screwed up my logic and math above, as I was looking at my son’s action card account that said he has 45 meals available (he has the 55 plan, they carve out 10 in a separate guest bucket).

So, assuming son eats 90 dinners, it’s either $466 (Bama 55) + $325.15 ($9.29 x 35) for a total of $791.15. He’ll also get 8 bonus meals for signing up for meal plan now.

Or $793 for the bronze 90. So to gamble he will actually eat those extra 35 meals it will cost us $2 and lock us into the 90 meals for both semesters. And this is assuming all the meals are dinner. For lunch it will cost us more. The 55 choice is really a no-brainer now.

Loved that video, BTW. :)

So, thanks for pointing out that I should not have purchased the 90 meal plan for my D. Ugh, does anyone know if it is too late for me to change meal plans?

Sniner, I don’t know if you can change now.

Sales tax might be a factor (and may make the 90 plan make a little more sense). We need SEAtide to come along and tell us if sales tax is included in the $9.29 or not. That is such a SEAtide question if there ever was one.

Added: even though the 55 says no guest meals on the dining web page, it is broken down to 45 regular meals and 10 guest meals (that can also be used by student) when you look at their action card account.

The 55 meal plan used to be a 50 meal plan which did not include guest meals. There appears to be a change this year.

The $9.29 for dinner, $9.00 for lunch includes tax, but the $5.00 Fridays does not so those cost $5.45. I’ve always thought that UA should create a non-refundable form of Dining Dollars similar to other schools which gives students a 10% discount and makes their purchases tax exempt, but I don’t think Alabama law allows for that.

As a night owl who would normally have dinner very late, I often found it better to wait until Late Night started so I could pay the breakfast price. Bama Dining seems to alternate on deciding to have non-breakfast food at Late Night or not, which is annoying for those of us who don’t particularly enjoy having non-bacon breakfast foods for dinner multiple times a week. ;)

Thanks, SEA_tide! Unless the cash price has increased over last year, I don’t see a reason for a returning student to buy any meal plan in between the 55 and the unlimited.

Sniner, I know you can downgrade once. Just don’t know if there is a penalty for doing it now before the semester starts or not - but please let us know if you find out.

I sent an email last night. I will let you know.

One simple email and my daughter now has the 55 meal plan rather than the 90. Thanks for doing the math Class2012Mom!
