so when i was paying for the 1,200 initial payment for the dining, it said that i had to pay a $34.80 payment fee… are there any other ways i could pay avoiding this payment fee… or does everybody usually pay this extra service charge… because how would paying online cost 34 bucks… i’m not trying to be stingy here, but money is uptight for me and it seems like im paying extra money for pretty much nothing…

^^ Sounds like you paid with a credit card. They charge a processing fee. It’s better to sign up for CashNet (eCheck) where they automatically take the money from a designated checking account. No fees. However, I understand if you don’t have that much in your acct. to cover it, a credit card would be your best bet. I’m not sure why they have to tack on that fee! For people who used their cc for the Housing deposit, they charged an extra $23 on top of the $800. That’s one of the reasons I went with an eCheck.

FYI - Credit card companies charge the vendor, in this case Cal Poly, a fee of from 1 to 4 percent of each transaction. Cal Poly is simply passing the fee on to you. Echecks are electronic funds transfers, and no costs are incurred by the college.

^^ True. I knew that it was the credit card companies adding these fees. I should have clarified that Cal Poly is only passing those on. This happens in other businesses, as well. Either way, like you said, eChecks are a better option if you don’t want to pay extra. But I can also understand if someone doesn’t have the available funds in their account at the time of the deposit or payment.

Yeah i had to pay the fee…
