Cavalier Computers

I don't know which computer I should purchase (money is not an issue). If you guys are buying a computer from UVa, which one are you going to choose and why?

the dell laptop which is rated as the most popular lap top at uva

I thought the 15" powerbook was rated as the most popular laptop at uva..? Either way, the cavalier computers prices suck. I'm buying my compyter elsewhere.

not sure about which is most popular, but I ordered a 15" powerbook for next fall. however, I ordered it directly from apple and not cavalier computers.

i would love to get an apple, but alas, the seas does not support macs.

I'm considering getting an apple or a dell. I've been poking around on notebookforums.com, and I've found some coupon codes for some sweet deals (such as $750 off a configuration of $1999+)

i think i'm getting an apple powerbook. Is it not that much cheaper if you purchase at UVa?

Computers at UVA are so overpriced. Screw them, i just order my over the net. I was comparing them with the ones in the booklet and know that i saved some 700 dollars. I see no reason to pay extra.

tenniscraze: it is more expensive if you purchase from CavalierComputers.

jmione: I agree.

Here's a tip for you guys, from one 'hoo to another:

http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/value_inspn?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Amazing deal!

A decent discount for HP Notebooks (Or anything HP Sells!!!!!!!!)

https://eclipse.ebus.hp.com/dn/jsp/products_you.jsp?agencyid=135

from one 'hoo to another, lol

The discount I posted is $750 off any inspiron laptop configuration that lists for $1499 or more. I highly recommend that you look into it; I'm considering buying an inspiron 9300 for $1275 with the following specs: 1.6ghz pentium M cpu, 17" widescreen monitor, 512mb ram, 80gb HD, windows XP professional, 8x DVD-RW, and a 256mb nVidia 6800 GPU. Not bad, eh? It lists at $2025, and with the typical dell discount it is around $1700.

Ahhhh the Dell Discount (750 off any notebook) is NO MORE.

The promotion is gone.

You snooze You Lose. lol

No worries, jmione. I think they release similar "$750 off" coupons every few weeks.

Hey man, SEAS/E-School DOES support mac man! I heard if there is a certain problem, you could use the labs. Where did you heard macs aren't supported?!

At least in my humble opinion the point of getting a computer is so you don't have to use the labs and can do your work on your own machine. SEAS does use some applications which are windows only - so if you do get a mac you are likely looking at spending some time in the labs.

if you really wanted to get a mac and need it to run windows programs, there is a program called "Virtual PC" that allows you to run the windows programs on your mac - it runs about $250 or less

if you go to this site:

http://www.cavcomp.virginia.edu/bts/default_seas.asp

it states at the bottom that 'Software used by the School of Engineering is only compatible with the Windows operating system.'

I am leaving this semester and I have a DCI iBook G4 I'll unload for $550.

Why are you leaving?

just wondered if anyone uses a tablet-especially in the engineering school. also, does anyone know if first year textbooks for enginnering can be purchased as electronic versions? thanks in advance.
