I am a 20 year old Bio student trying to transfer to UC Davis, Merced, Irvine, Berkely, and Santa Barbara with a 3.2 GPA. I am really worried that I wont be accepted; because my TAG was denied (missing some music class). I messed up during 2 semesters and I have 3 C's now. One in Cell Bio, Botany, and the first semester of the year-long General Chem. I am taking the last half of Calc and Calc level Physics right now and I am very confident that I will get an A in each of them this semester. Please and Thank you!!! Be brutally honest please. I am a White/Mexican male if that helps.

If I don't get in, what are my options? If I can do anything at the moment to better my chances, please tell me.

Santa Barbara and Irvine look better in terms of your chances, but not by much since Biology is impacted at every UC.

Merced is within your range of GPA, so I’m almost sure you’ll be accepted there.

The problem is that you have those three C’s and a W in your major requisite courses, which is very important in terms of admissions. If those C’s were in non-major courses, then it wouldn’t matter AS much. With all of this said, there’s not much else you can do at this point in trying to transfer for Fall 2014 Quarter/Semester, unless you have a reason to report to the UC’s about why you got those C’s/W. In terms of the future, you could stay at a CC for one more year and try to raise your GPA and possibly TAG again for whatever school you want to go to.

I have a 3.34 GPA and am also a BioSci major, I got two C’s in non major classes (Pre-calculus and English 2) But I’ve gotten an A in almost all of my major req classes so far (Calculus, Gen Chem, Bio) And only two B’s in major pre req classes. Would you say I have a good chance at Davis and SB with good grades in my major pre-reqs even though I only have a 3.34? Thank you and sorry for hijacking this thread.

Also doesn’t Davis have a really high transfer rate? (59.1%) Compared to other UC’s?

To the OP, the 3.2 should help you get into some UC. Santa Cruz, SB, and Davis accept people with 3.0s all the time.

^ I think you have a shot at UCSB. I saw a video by the UC people of a bio student who had a 3.3x, rejected from UCLA and UCB, accepted everywhere else (he did have a hispanic URM hook tho)

What about UCD? Here are the grades for my pre-reqs Bio-Sci:
General Chemistry I B (5 Units)
General Chemistry II A (5 Units)
General Physics I B (4 Units)
Principles of Biology A (5 Units)
Calculus I A (5 Units)
Calculus II W (5 Units) Retaking this fall

Finishing Calc 2 and the Bio sequence this spring, will take physics 2 during the summer and finish up that sequence. Won’t be taking Ochem until after transfer.

The biology departments welcome transfer students. To be admitted and to make normal progress within all biology majors, the departments require transfer students to have already completed the following, with a minimum GPA of 2.7 in all preparatory science courses:
•1 year sequence of General Chemistry with laboratory, with no individual grade less than “C”.
•1 complete sequence (2-3 terms) of major-applicable General Biology with laboratory, with no individual grade less than “C”.
•A cumulative GPA of 2.7 or better in the required courses listed above.

UCSB requires at least a 2.7 in your 6 pre-major courses and you are a 2.4. Does not look like Bio at UCSB is possible.

If possible, use the TAG program for your favorite campus. The requirements vary a bit by school and major but, it is a known path and threshold… no guesswork.
