@cayton, correct.

Coincidentally I can’t meet the AA requirements either.

Coincidentally I can’t meet the AA requirements either.

@bomerr - What requirements are so hard to meet at SMC? Lol

@Matt4200, not hard, I just didn’t take the classes required for an AA degree. I’m on the IGETC & UCB 7- course Breadth Pattern + + foreign language requirement.

@Matt4200

Something tells me I still won’t be able to get an AA, lol.

@bomerr - What’s your major?

Because the AA-T allows you to get the degree with:

1) IGETC Certified (UC or CSU)

2) 60 Transferrable units

3) 2.0 GPA

4) 18 units completed in major

So the only hard part is the 18 in major which I’m assuming since you’re transferring to UCB you’d have that done already.

Unless your specific major doesn’t offer a degree at SMC

@Cayton - Depends…What’s your major? Or another major you’ve completed at least 18 units in? Lol

Haas Transfer. To get an AS-T In Business I would need to complete Business Law, Business Communication & CSU Golden 4 Speech class.

"To complete an AS-T in Business Administration a student must meet the following requirements:

@bomerr - Speech class isn’t required per CA Educational Code 66746 (1) (a) the law requires only the requirements listed above, and if your campus or district is attempting to add a requirement (I.e. - Making it IGETC for CSU and not just IGETC UC or CSU as the language states in the Law) they cannot do that and that would be a lawsuit.

I’m being granted the AA-T at my CC in Sociology with no speech class due to the language of the California Educational Code. And consequently I am by law guaranteed admission to a CSU campus WITH NO SPEECH CLASS lol

So you didn’t complete the 18+ in major?

I got the AA-T verification letter today at my CCC and am sending it out to a couple CSU’s tomorrow just as an experiment to see what they’ll do with my guaranteed admission even though I haven’t complied with their “Golden Four” haha

It should be funny, loopholes are awesome, work the system, don’t let the system work you. ;)

I know I’m going to a UC almost no matter what (unless a CSU somehow offers me a full ride and I like the campus) lol

My daughter’s counselor last year also confused her on her ability to get an AA degree. First off, schools have a AA and and AA-Transfer…you may qualify for one but not the other…so you should check. She originally was going to get an AA in Communications but classes were required that she did not want to take, ie: Library Research, or something like that. She was going to forget the AA until she was told by another counselor this year that she could get an AA in Liberal Studies. I think this degree basically is based upon the IGETC requirements…with a few more classes.So if in doubt, I would ask someone else just to make sure.

Not sure if my daughter is walking…but as a Mom I would like to see it…even though most people do not seem it it a big deal, be proud of yourself…it is an accomplishment which you should be proud of. Plus, most of you here are on this forum did well enough the try to transfer to a UC…so you received good grads as well…Congratulations!!

@Sockhermom - Definitely consult at least 2 counselors if you have even a shred of doubt.

My counselor told me it was a 99.99% chance I would not be granted the AA-T, and I spoke in depth to the articulation officer and essentially explained the law to them and they agreed that the law would allow for it and said that it would be granted to me, and the counselor I spoke to was completely awestruck it was kind of funny. I think they did it because the same law also states that if a district tries to add additional requirements (like requiring IGETC CSU pattern when the law only required IGETC not specifically the CSU patter) the state can rescind the money that it sends them each year for failure to comply, so they didn’t wanna see that money disappear.

And for another Degree I was told by two counselors that I had completed 17 of the 18 required units, and I asked if it was possible to substitute a similar course and they said well because you’re already getting 2 degrees, we say NO. I scheduled a meeting with the Dean of the subject area and the Department chair and explained in depth the district policy allows substitution, that I’m only one unit short, and that there had recently been budget cuts which caused our campus to cut classes that I would have taken (not really) to complete the degree, and they agreed and long story short I’m getting a 3rd AA degree.

It’s all about tenacity if you have none you likely will not make it far in the real world.
