a CCC-er here, hoping to transfer to UCI. so. went to my counselor. confused me as hell. said/mentioned classes to complete an AA degree (like an anthro for multicultural studies, PE). ...is that even necessary when transferring? i don't want to take an anthro class or a PE if i don't even need to and could just focus on doing my major requisites.

thanks for your time. it's probably such a stupid question to ask - but safer-and-look-idiot, than screwed-and-be-an-idiot.

100% agree with lakerforever. He’s right, you don’t need an AA degree…especially if you’re planning on getting a Bachelor’s or going further. I don’t want to take PE, health, or history lol, and those were considerations of mine too when I decided to skip on the AA degree.

LOL. She probably gets a bonus for how many AA’s she gets people to do. AA’s are a waste of time. She must have some incentive to offer you that poor choice.

An AA is just a certificate that tells that you are “half-way.”

@thebigsh0w - i was so thinking that. and can’t begrudge her, honestly. but i just wanted to make sure. again - look like an idiot than be one. thanks.

previous post that thanked everyone disappeared. so. thanks.

I’m getting my AA before I transfer (aiming at Haas and an MBA in the future) because all I need to do is take an additional speech class. I took 2 pe classes for fun already. This way I can be like, “Yo I have 3 degrees!”

If you’re on the fast track to a BA, as in you’re all set on your major, have your finances in order, blah blah, then don’t bother. But if you think you might want to get a part time job, or an internship, or a summer job, an AA will be valuable. Since job competition is pretty tough now, saying that you have an Associates and are pursuing a Bachelors is much more impressive than just saying you are in college-everyone’s in college lol. Obviously, if it’s a ton of strain to get it, it’s not worth it, but if it’s just a matter of taking anthropology instead of yoga one semester, do it.

We all know that the AA is pretty pointless, the standards are ridiculously low, and that it really doesn’t mean anything, but why not get a “degree” now?

I got an A.S. for something outside of my major. I think of it as completing a minor before I transfer. Doesn’t hurt to get an Associate’s Degree.

One semester, when I was still at my CC my UC transfer counselor was in the hospital and I ended up getter a regular counselor. I told her right away that I was transfer to the UC system and she said “OK, well let’s get your classes set up.” I ended up taking three classes that were only necessary if I was planning on getting an AA degree…I couldn’t make up my mind whether she was just clueless or didn’t believe I could transfer to a UC. Regardless she wasted my time.
ps I know what they always say about counselors but my regular one was the exception she was super good so I guess I let my guard down.
