CC Courses and Premed and Safety Cali

Hey guys, I'm in a dual enrollment program, so I have the option to take college courses. I was looking around the forums, and I saw a post stating that it was bad to take a course twice. I'm slightly confused because I've also heard that it's not good to take one of the pre requisites for med school at a CC.

The class that I'm looking at is Organic Chemistry. (My counselor suggested that if I am planning on transferring to UCLA, I should take the class) I have the time for it, but would taking it now and then taking it at a university (to get the full experience) actually be detrimental to my application?

And since I worked up the courage to finally make a thread (I'm a lurker), I have another question, if you don't mind. Does anyone know of a good safety school in California that is good for pre med? (I know the school doesn't really matter, but I'm wondering if anyone had positive experiences with pre med counselors and whatnot)

By safety, I mean under the rank of UCLA, UC Berkeley, USC, and UCSD type of schools. I think UC Irvine is an example.

Thanks!

Just going to bump this. :)

@Kanzu, how did you do in the general chemistry sequence?

Hi Plumazul, thanks for the reply.

I received A’s in General Chemistry.

In general, counseling at all UC’s is poor at best. A private offers better counseling, but you will pay for it.

Ah, by counseling, do you mean setting up internships? Can the discrepancy between the effectiveness of counseling be mitigated by active independent research?

Also, is it possible to list some good advisory pre med private schools in California?

Internships, advice on where and when to apply to grad school, course selection, you name it – UC advising is mass-marketed.

USC has good premed advising, as do Santa Clara and U-San Diego. I’ve heard mixed things about Stanford (surprisingly), and Caltech is an engineering school, so premed is not it’s forte. The Claremont Colleges have excellent advising.
