CC Indepedent Study

Do any of you have experience with an independent study course while in community college?

I'll be transferring next fall to one of the UC's — I have an approved TAG to UCR, but I've applied to other UC's as well. I've found plenty of information on this forum, and online in general, about independent studies as upper division courses, but not much regarding lower division, particularly at the CC-level.

To clarify, by independent study, I don't necessarily mean receiving credit for an internship, though it is the same concept. I'm referring specifically to when the student meets with the chair of a given department, and the student makes an outline and specifies an objective for a course that's not offered at the college. Then, with the guidance of a chosen professor, through weekly meetings, the student gets class credit for the independent study.

I'd like to do this with a course that is not available at my school. The class is not required to transfer, though it does fall under major preparation, so I would benefit greatly from it.

Though I'll be enrolled full-time in spring, I'll be reading the textbook for the class I'm referring to, and it would be nice if I could set it up as independent study, and get credit for it while I'm at it. So I would truly like to hear any experiences you guys may have had with this; if not at a CC, then at least at a university.

Thanks.
