You are right, forgetmenots. The kangaroo court is miserable for everyone. And most applicants can hopefully be described as "high quality." But trust me, a student can work his butt off through twelve years of schooling, can then spend hours and hours putting together an excellent application, and can still get rejected from the college of their choice, no matter how qualified. The more highly qualified the applicant, the more competitive the college, the harder the process is.

i applied to 1 and even that was too much "application" for me!

oh- and i was accepted with a possible half tuition scholarship :-D

I applied to 3 universities in America and 4 in the UK. So 7.

applied to 10, if i had to do it over, i would apply to my first choice ED and save tons of money if i get in

one - only place I wanted to go, and I got lucky (late Dec. would have been QUITE a scramble otherwise)

I did 23, 6 safeties, 7 matches, 10 reaches just so hopefully I'll have plenty of options to choose from come late March! It is a lot of work and it's HELL while you're in the process but it's quite rewarding when you get that many options. And since I'm doing so many reaches, I felt I needed to load up on more safeties to balance it out, and for security. I made sure that for each of my schools, I wouldn't mind going to it if it were the only one out of 23 that took me because I've seen the vast majority of them and been to information sessions and such. No doubt it's a lot of work, and VERY, VERY stressful but I feel that in the end, it's worth it. (Plus, if many of them are on common-app you're basically using and reusing essays, it's not as bad as it sounds. The only ones you have to spend loads of time on are the ones that you must tailor to that specific school itself. For example the "Why (insert college name here)?" essays, where you have to do your research, but apart from that, it's not as bad as people make it out to be.

i did 11, 2 safeties, 2 matches and 7 reaches. Hopefully I'll get into one of my reaches :)

23 babycakes?! ...I bet your guidance department must not like you very much anymore :P

7 colleges: 1 safety, 1 match, 5 reaches

The perfect number!

I don't see why anyone is applying to more than 1 safety. If these are your true safeties, you should be making the decisions beforehand as to which safety you will end up going to if you don't get accepted to your reach/matches. Applying to more than 2 safeties just doesn't make sense to me (other than financial aid I guess)... can anyone explain?

6 For Me:

2 Reach-Yale, Penn
1 Match BC(Accepted EA)
3 Safety (Providence, SMU, TCU)-Accepted all EA

Providence gave me a huge scholarship so I'll most likely end up there. but BC is definetly a possibility and I hope I have a chance at Penn or Yale.

My son started with 12, but ended up applying to 7, after reviewing his choices more carefully.

I think he would be happy with any of his choices - admitted to 4 of 7 so far, but 2 of the last 3 will probably be rejections, since they were his "reach" schools.

I only applied to two. Wharton ED and the University of Minnesota.

I have a terrible GC and most kids from my school only apply to one. (the local state college)

Applied to 10-- so far have been accepted to 7... still waiting on UCSD, Cal, and UCLA. End of march. -__-

i applied to 16 schools, 4 safeties, 1 match, and 11 reaches. Seems like a lot, but i cut it down from 22, because i was too lazy to do the essays.

I only applied to one. It was the only school I wanted to go to and I knew I'd be accepted so there was no reason for others.

WOW, I'm so surprised 7 is the majority. That's how many I applied to.

I applied to one and got in ED with a sweet scholarship.

I kept telling myself that if I were rejected I'd have time to fill out other applications, but the truth is that I probably would have been screwed. Waiting for the letter was the most stressful two weeks of my life, but it's totally worth it now. I saved so much money in application fees!

I applied to one safety, one match, and two reaches.

I'm happy with how it came out.

I applied to 9 schools: 3 reach, 4 matches, and 2 safeties. So far it's 3 acceptance, including my ED school, so the game is finally over!

I applied to one ED. I didn't start any other applications so it was pretty good that I was accepted. Probably wasn't the smartest move, but at least I only had to fill out one app!
