Hi, first post here :)~
Background info: Have GED (been out of highschool for 5 years now), have not taken SAT/ACT. The state college I want to attend requires only 16 compatible credits from the cc to transfer.

I'm planning on enrolling in community college this fall, but would ultimately like to transfer to a 4-year school. My problem is that I don't know how long to stay at the cc. While it would be more cost-effective to get an A.S. and then transfer, I feel that the general education courses at the cc aren't as interesting as the state college's (I would rather take a class called VAMPIRES: HISTORY OF THE UNDEAD that meets my ge requirement than mandatory Composition I&II, but whether or not it is worth the difference of a few grand.. I don't know.)

Would it be a poor decision to transfer after 1 semester at the cc (the transfer deadline is before grades get finalize, so I may not have anything to show?) - would it be better to stay for the school year --- or would it be best to suck it up, save money, get the 2-year degree, and then transfer?

I would at least stay a year. You probably wouldn’t get in if you tried to transfer after only 1 semester. Yes, you might have the required 16 credits but there would be nothing for the college to base admission on.

I’m a sophomore at a cc and will be transferring next fall. Your school might only require 16 units to transfer but most want either more than 24 for a freshmen transfer or 60+ to be a junior.

I would say it is more than worth it to stay at your cc a minimum of 1 year. You should take atleast two full semesters. Not to mention at a cc you will be paying 40ish per unit and a 4 year it an entirely new ball game. If your looking to save money, cc is the way to go.

Cc’s do have fun classes. It takes a little more work to find them and get into them. My cc has the history of rock and roll as a music class. It fulfills the performing art requirement or something like that.

My attitude about my cc is this. It’s been the best and worst 2 years of my life. After 2 years at a 4 year it will only be memories.

Sanctify - If your cc has a transfer advisor, you should pop by that person’s office so that you can learn more about your options. They can tell you what kinds of courses and what kinds of grades are necessary to transfer into the programs that you are interested in. Read through this link to get an idea of the sort of information that advisor should be able to find for you.
